Overview
EUGEO (the Association of Geographical Societies in Europe) is a European umbrella organisation that represents national and regional geographical societies at the European level. Its stated aim is to coordinate and initiate joint activities of its members to advance research and education on the Geography of Europe and to promote the scientific discipline, the school subject and the professional practice of Geography in Europe. It has members from 27 countries and also functions as a network and forum for strengthening the position and operations of its member organisations, particularly for activities with a European dimension. The association was formed at the initiative of the Italian Geographical Society (Società Geographica Italiana, SGI). In 1994 representatives of geographical societies in the European Union gathered in Rome at the SGI headquarters, Villa Celimontana (the 'home of Geography'), and decided to establish an association. The idea was to encourage and enhance greater collaboration between the independent scholarly European geographical societies, associations and institutes. Between 1994 and 1996 the statutes were drafted and agreed, and in Paris in December 1996 the first meeting of the Board of Directors and the first General Assembly took place. EUGEO has functioned since 1997 as an international scientific association under Belgian law. EUGEO organises events including the NuitGéo – GeoNight and congresses; its 2026 General Assembly is scheduled alongside the 5th Lithuanian Geographers' Congress. The Executive Committee includes President Professor Zoltán Kovács (Hungarian Geographical Society MFT), Secretary-General Professor Massimiliano Tabusi (Associazione dei Geografi Italiani, A.Ge.I), Treasurer Professor Leo Paul, Past President Professor Henk Ottens, and members Professor Antoine Le Blanc, Professor Ana Pejdo, Professor Kathy Reilly and Professor Christian Vandermotten.
History
EUGEO was formed at the initiative of the Italian Geographical Society (Società Geographica Italiana, SGI). In 1994 representatives of geographical societies in the European Union gathered in Rome at the SGI headquarters, Villa Celimontana (the 'home of Geography'), and decided to establish an association. The idea was to encourage and enhance greater collaboration between the independent scholarly European geographical societies, associations and institutes, each of whom had a community of geographers from a nation or region in an EU member state as their membership. The initial objectives of EUGEO were to improve communication and exchange ideas between member institutions, to act as a lobbying body for geography in Europe, to improve synchronisation of geographical research at a Pan-European level, and to identify new scientific and educational responsibilities for geography within Europe so as to position geography more fully within the centre of the European debate. Between 1994 and 1996 the statutes were drafted and agreed, and in Paris in December 1996 the first meeting of the Board of Directors and the first General Assembly took place, with representatives from each of the founding societies. EUGEO has functioned since 1997 as an international scientific association under Belgian law. Cooperation among the different national and regional geographical societies and associations in the EU, participation in joint projects to study European problems, promotion of geography at the European level and establishing relations with the European Union became the main priority aims. At the 2007 congress in Amsterdam the objectives were redefined: to raise awareness and promote knowledge and use of geography in environmental matters in schools, higher education, businesses, governments and the wider public in Europe; to ensure a focus on European research in all fields of geography in Europe; to address geographical issues from a comprehensive European Union perspective; to prepare and alert competent institutions and bodies, especially of the European Union, to natural and social processes and to prepare recommendations supporting the goals of the EU and EUGEO; to promote the professional position and development of geography in Europe; to facilitate and enable the exchange of information through the publication of publications and the convening of conferences and similar meetings; to promote pan-European geographical information resources; and to promote good practices in the teaching of geography at all levels of European education.
