Overview
EUMES – Escola Universitària de Música Avançada i So is a private higher-education institution in Girona, Catalonia, Spain, dedicated to contemporary music, sound production and the music business. Its campus is located in La Marfà – Centre de Creació Musical, a former 19th-century cotton-spinning mill that was preserved and converted into a public cultural complex. The school was founded in 2012 out of a local initiative to strengthen modern music and production education in the Girona area, bringing together the city council, La Marfà, the arts college ERAM, and working musicians and producers. EUMES offers an integrated training model adapted to different stages and goals: official four-year higher courses (240 ECTS) equivalent to a university degree, professional diplomas of one to three years, and intensive short courses. Its teaching areas cover music production and songwriting, sound and technology (recording, mixing and mastering, live sound, sound design), electronic music and DJing, film/game/media scoring, and music business and industry. The school is recognized by the Catalan government as a higher arts education institution in the field of music, placing it within Spain's Ensenyaments Artístics Superiors (higher artistic education) framework. A flagship offering is the Diploma in Advanced Music and Sound, a three-year, 180-ECTS programme structured as six 30-credit specialization certificates, recognized by the Fundació Universitat de Girona, with an optional fourth year at the University of West London (London College of Music). EUMES is also an Ableton Certified Training Centre and emphasizes project-based, industry-realistic learning, with students assessed through finished outputs such as tracks, EPs, showcases and portfolios. The school maintains strong industry links through mentors and tutors who are active producers and engineers, including Grammy and Latin Grammy winners and nominees. It also operates an international admissions office in Seoul, South Korea, to support applicants from Korea and Asia. Teaching languages include Spanish, Catalan and English.
History
EUMES was founded in 2012 in Girona, Catalonia, Spain, emerging from a local effort to strengthen modern music and production education in the region. The initiative involved the Girona city council, La Marfà – Centre de Creació Musical, the arts college ERAM, and working musicians and producers, who aimed to create training that would be genuinely useful in the real music industry. The school is housed in La Marfà – Centre de Creació Musical, a building that originated as a 19th-century cotton-spinning mill. The mill had been a symbol of the transformation of the agricultural village of Santa Eugènia de Ter into an industrial zone and operated as a textile factory until production ceased in the late 20th century. Rather than leaving it abandoned, the city treated it as a key part of an industrial heritage preservation and regeneration project, registering it as Catalan architectural heritage and renovating it. The brick structure, long naves and vaulted ceilings of the main factory building were largely retained while the interior was modernized, creating the public cultural facility Espai Marfà, which today houses La Marfà – Centre de Creació Musical, the Salvador Allende Library and a civic centre. During the 2010s, EUMES developed programmes in collaboration with Girona city council, La Marfà and foundations linked to the Universitat de Girona, connecting modern music and sound education with local performances, festivals and masterclasses. It also became known as an Ableton Certified Training Centre, establishing itself as a practice-oriented institution covering music production, sound and the music business. In the 2020s, EUMES received authorization from the Catalan government as a higher arts education institution in the field of music, placing it within Spain's Ensenyaments Artístics Superiors (higher artistic education) framework and giving it the status of a degree-level official education provider. At the same time, it expanded tutoring and mentoring programmes with producers and engineers who have Grammy and Latin Grammy awards, raising its profile as a modern music education institution with an international network. EUMES has also developed international pathways. Its Diploma in Advanced Music and Sound is a three-year, 180-ECTS programme recognized by the Fundació Universitat de Girona, with an optional fourth year at the University of West London (London College of Music). Some students continue to other European schools such as Catalyst in Berlin. To support applicants from Korea and Asia, EUMES operates an official international admissions office in Seoul, South Korea, called EUMES Asia International Admissions Office.
