European Coalition for Israel

European Coalition for Israel (ECI) describes itself as a unique grassroots movement seeking to promote better relations between Europe and Israel through advocacy and education. It was launched in Brussels in 2003 as "a coalition of all the others," meaning non-Jews who felt it was their moral obligation to stand up for the Jewish people and the State of Israel in a time of threat. ECI defines itself as a coalition of Christian organizations, grassroots movements, and churches from different Christian cultures and backgrounds, and states that it mobilizes prayer and engages with EU officials, UN diplomats, and government leaders on behalf of its mission. It has also initiated the International Coalition for Israel – USA (ICI-USA), a U.S.-based organization.

European Coalition for Israel traces its origin to a 2000 crisis summit hosted by the European Commission, where Nobel Peace Prize Laureate Elie Wiesel spoke about the rise of antisemitism in Europe and asked, "Where are all the others?" ECI was formed in response to this question as "a coalition of all the others," meaning non-Jews who felt it was their moral obligation to stand up for the Jewish people and the State of Israel in a time of threat. It was launched in Brussels in 2003. Since 2003, ECI has been a voice in Brussels at the European Institutions (i.e. the European Union) and then expanded over time to being a voice also at the international institutions (i.e. the United Nations). ECI has initiated the International Coalition for Israel – USA (ICI-USA), a U.S.-based organization to promote international cooperation and trans-Atlantic relations.
