History
The European Disability Forum was created in 1996 by its member organisations to ensure that decisions at European level concerning persons with disabilities are taken with and by persons with disabilities. It is an international non-profit organisation established in 1996 and recognised under Belgian law. In May 2004, a new EDF Constitution was adopted by the Annual General Assembly, designed to meet the challenges of the European Union (EU) enlargement and with considerable implications for the functioning and composition of EDF governing bodies and on membership rules. EDF statutes have been reviewed by the Annual General Assembly on 5 October 2007, 28 October 2011, 25 June 2022 and 12 May 2024; the last version was adopted on 12 May 2024 in Ljubljana, Slovenia. EDF has since established regular channels of advocacy to European institutions including the European Parliament, the European Commission, and the Council of the EU.
