History
The origins of the European Movement Switzerland go back to 1934, when the «Europa-Union Schweiz» was founded in Basel. On 24 June 1934, the Europa-Union Schweiz was founded in the Capitol cinema in Basel with the vision of creating the «United States of Europe» — a democratic federal state intended to act as a dam against the Nazi danger. The Europa-Union was also the first European federalist movement on the continent. In September 1946, when the British wartime prime minister Winston Churchill sketched the United States of Europe in his famous Zurich speech, the Europa-Union invited federalists from all over Europe who had emerged from the resistance movement to the Hertenstein Conference on Lake Lucerne. Since 1934, Swiss people have worked to secure the European future of their country, and the organization continues to promote Switzerland's active participation in European institutions and the further development of relations with the European Union.
