Overview
Europees Massagoed Overslagbedrijf (EMO) is the largest dry bulk transshipment terminal in Europe, strategically located at Maasvlakte in the Port of Rotterdam, Netherlands. The company was founded in 1973 as a joint venture of three Rotterdam firms and has since grown into a critical logistics hub for the steel, silicon metal, and energy industries. EMO handles approximately 14 million tonnes of coal and 11 million tonnes of iron ore annually, serving some of the world's largest bulk carriers with a maximum draught of 23 metres. The terminal covers 170 hectares and is equipped with highly automated ship unloaders, loaders, stacker reclaimers, and rail wagon loaders. Since September 2015, HES International has been the sole shareholder of EMO, having previously held a 57% stake. EMO's operations are deeply integrated into the European energy and steel supply chains, with about 80% of dry bulk products transported to the German hinterland via rail and waterways. The terminal also offers value-added services such as screening, mixing, and washing of coal for the silicon metal industry. EMO has demonstrated resilience through economic cycles, recovering from the 2009 financial crisis and the 2012 steel production downturn, with a 20% increase in transshipment in 2013.
History
The idea for the EMO terminal took shape around 1960, driven by the discovery of large new reserves of basic raw materials such as iron ore and coal in Australia, South America, and South Africa. The use of super-large bulk carriers made it possible to transport these raw materials to Europe at low cost. In 1965, a joint venture of three Rotterdam companies decided to build a transshipment facility in the Port of Rotterdam capable of receiving the largest possible bulk ships. EMO began operations in 1973 and has since become one of the largest coal and iron ore transshipment terminals in Europe. HES Beheer's interest in EMO dates from September 1985 through participation in Frans Swarttouw BV, one of the three founders. By mid-2015, HES held a 57% stake in EMO and made an offer for the remaining 43% of shares held by the SNV Group. The SNV Group itself had two shareholders with 50% each: ThyssenKrupp Steel from Germany and Belgium's Sea Invest. Since September 2015, HES has owned all shares in EMO. The terminal has direct access to the North Sea and can handle ships with a maximum draught of 23 metres. The unloading capacity is 200,000 tonnes per day. For direct ship-to-ship transshipment, a floating crane is available. The storage area is 170 hectares, bounded by three harbours. At the Mississippihaven, the sea quay is 1,400 metres long and can accommodate four bulk carriers with a draught of up to 23 metres. Five wide-span grab cranes (unloaders) serve this quay: three have a lifting capacity of 85 tonnes per lift with unloading capacities ranging from 3,000 to 7,000 tonnes per hour in total; two others have a lifting capacity of 50 tonnes with unloading capacities from 1,500 to 2,500 tonnes per hour. The grabs for these cranes were built by NEMAG in Zierikzee. The coal grabs for the 85-tonne cranes are 60 m³, and those for the 50-tonne crane are 38 m³. A 36-tonne floating crane is also available. A sea-going loader with a capacity of 5,000 tonnes per hour is also located here. At the Hartelhaven, there is an inland navigation quay 950 metres long with three barge loaders for inland vessels, each with a loading capacity of 5,000 tonnes per hour. The storage yard is divided into 8 lanes of 1,300 metres each, allowing dumping and loading from two sides. The entire complex is interconnected by a conveyor belt system. Most of the outbound transport takes place by ship, with rail transport also important. EMO has three wagon loaders with loading capacities ranging from 2,750 to 4,000 tonnes per hour. The company also has 6 mixing silos, each holding 7,000 tonnes, where different types of coal can be blended for better combustion in coal-fired power plants. EMO also has the capacity to wash 3,000 tonnes of coal per day (removing impurities) and to screen it. As rolling stock, EMO has 2 Caterpillar 990K and 2x988K, 3 Caterpillar 966K for hold cleaning, 2 CAT 329 E for hold cleaning, 2 725 dump trucks, 1 950K, 1 938K, 5 CAT wheel loaders, and 7 Paus wheel loaders. In recent years, EMO has achieved steady growth in supply, revenue, and profit. In 2009, supply fell by 32% due to the credit crisis and the sharp decline in economic growth. Iron ore supply dropped by 60% that year due to problems in the steel industry, while coal supply shrank by 10%. In 2012, lower steel production in Europe led to a 17.4% decrease in iron ore supply and a 7.4% drop in coal transshipment. In 2013, transshipment rose by 20%, with increases in both coal and iron ore supply.
