Overview

EVA Air, formally EVA Airways Corporation, is a Taiwan-based international airline and a member of the Evergreen Group. It was created in 1989 after Evergreen founder Chang Yung-fa announced plans to establish a privately owned international carrier during Taiwan’s liberalisation of commercial aviation. The airline began flying on 1 July 1991 with Boeing 767 aircraft from Taipei to destinations including Bangkok, Seoul, Jakarta, Singapore and Kuala Lumpur. Its network expanded rapidly across East Asia and then to Europe and North America. The carrier operates from Taiwan Taoyuan International Airport and focuses its own network entirely on international passenger and cargo routes rather than domestic Taiwanese services. Its passenger network serves more than 40 international destinations across Asia, Australia, Europe and North America, while EVA Air Cargo operates dedicated freighters and uses connections with the Evergreen maritime and logistics network. The group’s regional airline, UNI Air, provides shorter-haul services in Taiwan and to selected destinations in Macau and mainland China. EVA Air became known for product differentiation as its international network matured. In 1992 it introduced a premium-economy cabin called Economy Deluxe on transpacific Boeing 747 flights. The product, subsequently renamed Evergreen Deluxe and then Elite Class, was an early large-scale premium-economy offering and included a wider seat arrangement, additional leg support and enhanced service. The airline later developed Premium Laurel business class, lie-flat seating and newer cabin products associated with its Boeing 777 and Boeing 787 fleets. The airline expanded its cargo business in the mid-1990s, introduced larger long-haul aircraft in the 2000s and joined Star Alliance in 2013. Its fleet has included Airbus A321 and A330 aircraft, Boeing 767, 777 and 787 aircraft, and Boeing 777 freighters. EVA Air has also invested in airline catering, ground handling and aviation engineering capabilities through affiliated or related businesses. EVA Air is positioned as a full-service, safety-focused international carrier. Its brand identity uses the Evergreen Group’s green visual language, with orange historically used as an accent. The airline’s service identity incorporates Mandarin, Taiwanese Hokkien, Hakka and English in appropriate operating contexts, and its slogan is “Sharing the World, Flying Together.” Skytrax has rated EVA Air as a five-star airline. The company remains listed in Taiwan and operates as one of the country’s principal international airlines alongside China Airlines and Starlux Airlines.

History

EVA Air emerged from the Evergreen Group’s expansion beyond maritime transport. In September 1988, Evergreen chairman Chang Yung-fa announced plans for a private international airline as Taiwan opened its aviation market to new competitors. EVA Airways Corporation was formally established in March 1989. The company initially considered the name Evergreen Airways, but adopted EVA Airways to avoid confusion with another organization. In October 1989 it ordered 26 aircraft from Boeing and McDonnell Douglas, including Boeing 747 and MD-11 aircraft. Commercial flying began on 1 July 1991 with three Boeing 767-300ER aircraft. The first routes connected Taipei with major Asian cities, and the network soon added European service, including Vienna. EVA Air’s early growth was supported by its association with Evergreen, substantial aircraft investment and an emphasis on international service quality. Boeing 747-400 aircraft arrived in 1992, allowing the airline to expand its long-haul network. A major brand and product milestone came in December 1992, when EVA Air introduced its Economy Deluxe premium-economy cabin on flights to Los Angeles. The cabin offered a wider seat layout and enhanced amenities, helping establish a product later known as Evergreen Deluxe and Elite Class. During the 1990s, the airline expanded to destinations such as Seattle and New York, started dedicated EVA Air Cargo services in 1995 and continued to build a global route structure. By 1994 it was serving 22 destinations and carrying more than three million passengers annually. It reported its first profit in 1995. EVA Air also developed a Taiwanese regional presence. It acquired interests in Makung International Airlines, Great China Airlines and Taiwan Airways. These operations, together with EVA’s domestic activities, were combined under UNI Air in July 1998. UNI Air became the group’s regional and domestic-oriented carrier, while EVA Air concentrated on international routes. The airline entered the 2000s with a major fleet renewal. It ordered Boeing 777 aircraft for North American and European services and Airbus A330 aircraft for regional Asian flying. EVA Air became publicly traded on the Taiwan Stock Exchange in 2001. The Asian financial crisis and the SARS outbreak placed pressure on traffic and profitability, prompting internal restructuring and cost controls. Nevertheless, the carrier continued to modernise its cabins and fleet. Its first Boeing 777-300ER entered service in 2005, supporting a new flagship long-haul product and upgraded Premium Laurel business class. During the late 2000s, fuel-price inflation caused losses and led to schedule reductions, higher fees and staffing changes. EVA Air returned to profitability in the first quarter of 2009. It continued adding strategic international links, including Toronto in 2010, Guam in 2011 and additional services to North America. After discussions concerning alliance membership, EVA Air joined Star Alliance on 18 June 2013. The airline continued expanding its North American network with announced services to Houston and Chicago and ordered Boeing 787 aircraft as part of its next-generation fleet plan. It introduced a revised livery in 2015 and took delivery of its first Boeing 787-9 in 2018, followed by Boeing 787-10 deliveries beginning in 2019. EVA Air has retained its full-service international model, combining passenger operations with cargo, affiliated regional flying and aviation-related support activities. Its current brand is associated with Evergreen’s green visual identity, premium-economy heritage, long-haul connectivity and five-star service recognition.
