History
The Evangelische Stiftung Volmarstein has understood itself since its founding in 1904 as a work of Diakonie in Christian-church responsibility. Around the turn of the century, confessional care for the physically disabled emerged in Germany; starting from the Potsdamer Oberlinhaus under Pastor Friedrich Hoppe and the Altona pastor Theodor Schäfer, a wave of foundings of institutions for the care of the physically disabled spread through Germany, often combining schooling, vocational training, medical care and residential homes under one roof. In Volmarstein, Pfarrer Franz Arndt engaged himself for social and medical improvements. His first foundings were a Rektoratsschule, the community, sick and old-age care home Bethanien, a Damenstift and an invalids' and convalescent home for workers; a club house for workers and a small children's school also belonged to these. Through donation collections, gifts, loans and support from church, economic and political circles, he succeeded in erecting his first house, designed for 100 disabled people. In his understanding, the offering was to serve the whole person and, alongside medical treatment, to include the areas of school, training, workshops and housing. After Germany's wartime isolation, the first structural expansions and further differentiation of the care offering in Volmarstein began in the early 1950s. The social laws of the Federal Republic, in particular the rehabilitation laws, created the preconditions for a tremendous expansion and differentiation of the offerings. Numerous conversions, renovations and extensions followed. Since 1904 the foundation founded by Pfarrer Arndt has been active in physical-disability and nursing care in Wetter (Ruhr) and has developed over the years into a diaconal complex institution.
