Overview
The Everett Theatre in Middletown, Delaware traces its origins to 1863, when the town's first stage opened in a building known as the "Town Hall and Opera House." After fires destroyed two earlier structures, the present theatre was built on the same site. It hosts performances, film events, and arts workshops, including productions such as A Few Good Men and the Manhattan Short Film Festival.
History
The Everett Theatre's history begins in 1863, when Middletown's first stage opened in a building originally known as the "Town Hall and Opera House," with the Middletown Opera House on the second floor and the Town Hall on the first. It served as a performing arts and cultural center until it was destroyed by fire on December 31, 1918. A second structure opened as a grand Opera House on September 1, 1919, with opening night drawing standing room only for 1,000 patrons and showing ten moving pictures. That building also burned down, on April 6, 1922. The owner, John E. Lewis, then engaged theater architects W.H. Hoffman and Paul J. Henon Jr. to design a new structure mostly of concrete and plaster, built by Bader Construction Co. of Wilmington, Delaware. During the Great Depression, Lewis fell on hard times, and in 1936 The Everett was auctioned off by The Delaware Trust Company on the bank steps; George M. Schwartz of Dover, owner of the Capital Theatre, made the highest bid of $10,000. The Everett remained in his family until 1983.
