Three years of cross-industry water sales bring roughly 4 billion yuan loss; sold cheaply, bought back, then sold again

Evergrande Group launched Evergrande Spring in 2013 with a real-estate-style "high-profile, high-spending" push: premium positioning, huge advertising (including football stadium placements), and aggressive distribution. But sales fell far short of investment, with cumulative losses of about 3.946 billion yuan from 2013 to May 2015, making it a typical cross-industry failure. Evergrande later sold the mineral water business for 1.8 billion yuan, bought back 49% of the equity in 2021, and sold it again amid a cash-flow crisis. Later, products made by licensed contract manufacturers were reported to have failed tests for Pseudomonas aeruginosa. The business was sold, and brand value was damaged.
