Overview
Evonik Tego Chemie GmbH is a German specialty chemicals brand that develops, produces and sells additives, co-binders, specialty binders and nanocomposites for the paints, coatings and printing inks industry. It originated in 1984 as Tego Chemie Service GmbH, a sales company founded by Th. Goldschmidt AG in Essen to market silicone-based coating and paint additives that had been developed and manufactured since 1978. The subsidiary began operations on 1 January 1985 and took over the distribution of additives for paint and printing ink production as well as silicone resins used as specialty binders for heat-resistant and highly corrosion-protective coatings. In 1999, Tego Chemie Service GmbH became part of SKW Trostberg AG together with its parent Goldschmidt AG. In 2001, Degussa-Hüls AG and SKW Trostberg AG merged to form Degussa AG, making Tego Chemie Service GmbH part of the Degussa chemicals group. On 12 September 2007, the integration of Degussa into the Evonik Industries group was announced, and on 16 October 2007 the company was renamed Evonik Tego Chemie GmbH. Since August 2004, the company has also distributed coating additives from Wacker Chemie AG. In April 2011, within the sale of the hanse chemie group to Evonik Goldschmidt GmbH, Evonik Tego Chemie GmbH took over the distribution of nanocomposites for the coatings and paints industry. The product range includes defoamers, deaerators, wetting and dispersing additives, substrate wetting additives, hydrophobizing agents, silicone resins, silicone polyester resins, silicone epoxy resins, synthetic resins and adhesion promoters. These additives prevent defects and unwanted effects in coatings. The company played a major role in developing additives that effectively prevented foam formation in solvent-free and UV coatings, supporting the breakthrough of innovative and environmentally friendly coatings. Today, the Tego brand is part of Evonik's Coating Additives business line, which supplies high-performance additives for paints, coatings and printing inks, including PFAS-free alternatives and the COATINO formulation network.
History
The origins of Evonik Tego Chemie lie in the silicone-based coating additive business of Th. Goldschmidt AG. The company Chemische Fabrik Th. Goldschmidt was founded in Berlin in 1847 by the chemist Theodor Goldschmidt and relocated to Essen in 1889/1890, laying the foundations for today's Goldschmidtstrasse site. In 1978, Th. Goldschmidt AG began developing and manufacturing silicone-based paint and coating additives. In October 1984, it founded Tego Chemie Service GmbH in Essen as a sales company for these additives. The new subsidiary started business on 1 January 1985 and took over the distribution of additives for paint and printing ink production as well as silicone resins as specialty binders for heat-resistant and highly corrosion-protective coatings, which had previously been handled by the silicone sales department. In 1999, Tego Chemie Service GmbH and its parent Goldschmidt AG became part of SKW Trostberg AG. In 2001, Degussa-Hüls AG and SKW Trostberg AG merged to form Degussa AG, making Tego Chemie Service GmbH part of the Degussa chemicals group. On 12 September 2007, the integration of Degussa into the Evonik Industries group was announced. On 16 October 2007, Tego Chemie Service GmbH was renamed Evonik Tego Chemie GmbH. Since August 2004, the company has distributed coating additives from Wacker Chemie AG. In April 2011, as part of the sale of the hanse chemie group to Evonik Goldschmidt GmbH, Evonik Tego Chemie GmbH took over the distribution of nanocomposites for the coatings and paints industry. The company developed, produced and sold additives, co-binders, specialty binders and nanocomposites that prevent defects and unwanted effects in coatings. Its product range included defoamers, deaerators, wetting and dispersing additives, substrate wetting additives, hydrophobizing agents, silicone resins, silicone polyester resins, silicone epoxy resins, synthetic resins and adhesion promoters. In the early 1980s, problems in the production and application of solvent-free and UV coatings, such as strong foam formation, hindered their commercial use. The development of additives that effectively prevented this foam formation supported the breakthrough of innovative and environmentally friendly coatings. Evonik Tego Chemie played a major role in these developments, and these products were part of the company's core business. Today, the Tego brand continues within Evonik's Coating Additives business line, which provides high-performance additives for paints, coatings and printing inks, including PFAS-free alternatives and the COATINO formulation network.
