Overview

Evry was a Norwegian information-technology services company created in 2010 through the merger of EDB Business Partner and ErgoGroup. Headquartered in Oslo, it supplied technology and business-process services to organizations in the Nordic region and selected international markets. Its activities included computing operations, IT outsourcing, software and product development, online-banking technology, core banking systems, payment services, and related technology support. The company inherited substantial experience in financial-sector technology from its predecessor businesses and developed a particularly strong position among banks and other regulated enterprises. Its service model combined infrastructure operation with application management, systems integration, outsourcing, and specialized software development. Through its Indian subsidiary, initially acquired as Span Infotech and subsequently renamed EVRY India, the company also maintained delivery and development capacity for customers in North America and Europe. EVRY India served sectors including banking and financial services, insurance, healthcare, retail, and logistics. EVRY operated at significant scale for a Nordic IT-services provider. The company was reported to have approximately 10,000 employees, 135 offices, and operations in 16 countries. Its customer base and capabilities were shaped by the digital transformation of banks and public- and private-sector organizations, where dependable infrastructure, payment processing, online channels, and outsourced technology operations were central requirements. The corporate structure changed several times during its existence. The business initially operated as EDB ErgoGroup ASA after the 2010 merger and adopted the EVRY name in April 2012. In 2014, management began reviewing strategic alternatives in response to conditions in the Nordic IT sector. In 2015, Apax Partners became the majority owner, a new board was appointed, and the company pursued a delisting from the Oslo Stock Exchange. EVRY was delisted on 29 October 2015 and subsequently operated as a privately controlled company. The company also undertook major cost and operating changes. After losing a contract with Norwegian bank DNB in 2015, EVRY announced planned workforce reductions in Norway and Sweden. Later that year, it announced the transfer of approximately 600 employees to IBM as part of a large outsourcing arrangement. These moves reflected the competitive pressure in infrastructure services and the company’s efforts to improve profitability and reshape delivery operations. EVRY continued to win large technology contracts before its eventual sale. In December 2018, it agreed with Handelsbanken to provide next-generation core banking and payment services in Finland under an eight-year agreement. In 2019, Tieto agreed to acquire EVRY for approximately EUR 1.2 billion. The combination created a company with more than 24,000 employees. The merged organization began operating as TietoEVRY on 2 January 2020, ending EVRY as an independent corporate brand.

History

Evry’s origins lay in two established Norwegian technology businesses, EDB Business Partner and ErgoGroup. They were combined in 2010 to form EDB ErgoGroup ASA. Telenor, the Norwegian telecommunications group, owned most of the shares in ErgoGroup before the combination, giving the new business a substantial corporate and technology-services foundation. The merged company supplied computing operations, infrastructure management, outsourcing, online-banking technology, and related services to enterprise and public-sector customers. In April 2012, EDB ErgoGroup changed its name to EVRY ASA. The new identity was intended to present the business as a unified Nordic technology-services provider rather than as a collection of predecessor operations. During this period, EVRY operated across the Nordic region and internationally, with a broad portfolio spanning IT operations, application services, financial technology, and software development. Its financial-services capabilities were especially important because banks required reliable systems for online banking, payment processing, and core banking operations. EVRY expanded its international delivery model through India. It acquired Span Infotech, an Indian software-services company, and renamed it EVRY India. The subsidiary had locations in Bangalore and Chandigarh and provided software and product-development services to customers in North America and Europe. Its work covered banking and financial services, insurance, healthcare, retail, and logistics. In 2016, EVRY announced plans to double staffing in India over a three-year period, supported by additional investment. In December 2017, it opened another Bangalore branch at Global Village Tech Park. The company began reassessing its ownership and strategic direction as competition intensified in the Nordic IT market. In August 2014, it announced a process to investigate strategic opportunities. In 2015, Apax Partners became majority owner, a new board was appointed, and EVRY decided to apply for delisting. The company was removed from the Oslo Stock Exchange on 29 October 2015. That same period brought operational restructuring. After EVRY lost a contract with DNB, one of Norway’s largest banks, it announced plans to eliminate approximately 500 to 550 positions in Norway and Sweden. The stated objective was to improve profitability, with expected savings described in the source material as approximately NOK 400–500 million. In October 2015, EVRY also announced a transaction under which approximately 600 employees would transfer to IBM in connection with an outsourcing arrangement. These changes illustrated the increasing use of consolidation, delivery relocation, and large-scale outsourcing in the infrastructure-services market. EVRY remained active in financial technology and won a significant agreement with Handelsbanken in December 2018. The companies agreed that EVRY would provide next-generation core banking and payment services in Finland under an eight-year arrangement. The contract reinforced EVRY’s position as a provider of mission-critical banking platforms rather than only a general-purpose IT outsourcer. In 2019, Tieto agreed to acquire EVRY for approximately EUR 1.2 billion. The transaction combined two major Nordic technology-services operations. The resulting company had more than 24,000 employees and began operating as TietoEVRY on 2 January 2020. EVRY therefore ceased to exist as an independent company, although its people, capabilities, customer relationships, and technology operations became part of the combined organization.
