Overview

EWA Energie- und Wirtschaftsbetriebe der Gemeinde St. Anton GmbH (commonly EWA St. Anton) is the municipally owned utility and services company of the Austrian municipality of St. Anton am Arlberg in Tyrol. According to its official website, it is a 100% municipal operation and, with a workforce of nearly 80, one of the largest employers in the St. Anton am Arlberg region. Its activities are organised into the areas Bauhof (municipal works yard), Energie (energy), Gewerbe (trade/commerce), Kommunal (municipal services), Netz (grid) and Services. The company traces its origins to 1907, when the first electric power generation began in St. Anton with a small plant on the Rosanna river. Over the following decades the undertaking grew from a local power station into a multi-service municipal utility. In 1999 the former E-Werk St. Anton was reorganised into the present GmbH, and successive integrations followed: water supply in 1999, sewerage, waste/valuable-materials yard and landfills in 2002, and the municipal works yard (Bauhof) in 2005. Today EWA supplies electricity to households and businesses in the region, largely under the ArlbergStrom brand introduced in 2014, and operates the local distribution grid. It also provides drinking water and sewerage services, waste collection and recycling facilities, district heating, and a range of commercial services. Its product and service portfolio includes photovoltaic systems, electrical installations, e-mobility charging infrastructure, and even kitchen sales and consulting. The company runs customer and service portals, publishes tariffs and forms, and engages in regional energy initiatives such as the ArlbergEnergie platform founded in 2017 and the Arlberger Energietage. As a 100% municipal company, EWA is not listed on any stock exchange and is owned by the Gemeinde St. Anton am Arlberg. It is a member of the regional energy landscape, cooperating with partners such as TIWAG (Tiroler Wasserkraft AG), with which a power supply contract was signed in 1953. Its history includes the construction of the Rosanna (1984–85) and Kartell (2003–05) power plants, the introduction of underground cabling from 1952, and the installation of Austria's first Tesla Supercharger in 2014 as part of its e-mobility expansion.

History

The history of EWA Energie- und Wirtschaftsbetriebe der Gemeinde St. Anton GmbH begins in 1907, when the first electric power was generated in St. Anton am Arlberg using a small plant on the Rosanna river. In 1921 the Krafthaus an der Rosanna (KW Moosbach) was built, providing local supply via overhead lines and pole-mounted transformers. A sales shop with an installation business opened in 1928. In 1952 the company began underground cabling of its network, and in 1953 it signed a power supply contract with TIWAG (Tiroler Wasserkraft AG). During this period, Herr Stadlbauer was head of the E-Werk; after him, Otto Wiedemann and Robert Matt took over interim management for about two years. From 1959 to 1962 Josef Maier served as managing director. In 1962 a new operating statute reorganised the E-Werk St. Anton, and Johann Schwarzinger succeeded Josef Maier as managing director. In 1966 a 1000 HP diesel generator was commissioned. In 1980 Jakob Klimmer became managing director, succeeding Johann Schwarzinger. Between 1984 and 1985 the Rosanna power plant was built. In 1999 the E-Werk St. Anton was reorganised into EWA Energie- und Wirtschaftsbetriebe der Gemeinde St. Anton GmbH, with the integration of the water supply in the same year. In 2002 sewerage, waste/valuable-materials yard and landfills were integrated, followed by the Bauhof (municipal works yard) in 2005. Between 2003 and 2005 the Kartell power plant was constructed. In 2011 DI Mag. (FH) Karl Schobel became managing director, succeeding Jakob Klimmer. In 2014 the Arlberg Strom brand was introduced, and the expansion of e-charging stations began with Austria's first Tesla Supercharger; the charging offering was continuously expanded in subsequent years. In 2016 the new Maienwasen soil excavation landfill was commissioned, and the kitchen division was added to EWA's range. In 2017 the ArlbergEnergie platform was founded, and a gap in the medium-voltage supply network was closed to provide redundant power supply in the town area. In 2019 construction of the U...
