Overview

EWE AG is the regional energy supplier for the Ems-Weser-Elbe region, parts of Brandenburg and the island of Rügen. It traces its roots to 1930 and today combines the business fields of energy, telecommunications and IT. The group is headquartered in Oldenburg, Lower Saxony, and is predominantly in municipal hands. With more than 11,000 employees and more than eight billion euros in revenue in fiscal year 2025, EWE describes itself as one of the most important companies in the German energy sector. Its activities center on climate protection and digital participation, with six growth fields: renewable energies, energy services, energy grids, telecommunications, large-scale storage/hydrogen and electromobility.

History

EWE's roots reach back to 1930, when the newly founded Oldenburgische Stromversorgungs AG (Oldag) merged with Weser-Ems-Stromversorgungs AG (Wesag) to form Stromversorgungs AG Oldenburg-Ostfriesland (Strosag), from which EWE AG later emerged. The company has remained predominantly in municipal hands. In the 1960s EWE entered gas supply, beginning natural gas supply in 1962 and concluding its first import contract for Dutch natural gas in 1975, becoming the central gas supplier for the Oldenburg region and later also Brandenburg. As early as the 1980s EWE recognized the key role of renewable energies. In 1996 it built what was then Europe's largest wind farm. In 2010, together with E.ON and Vattenfall, it commissioned Germany's first offshore wind farm, alpha ventus. Another milestone was the construction of Germany's first commercial offshore wind farm, Riffgat, in the North Sea in 2014. EWE AG emerged from a merger of Stromversorgungs AG Oldenburg-Ostfriesland (STROSAG AG) and the Landes elektrizitätsverband Oldenburg, and has supplied energy since 1930, today linking the business fields of energy, telecommunications and IT.
