Overview
The Fachvereinigung Krankenhaustechnik e.V. (FKT) is a German registered voluntary association and the country's largest professional body for senior technical personnel in healthcare institutions. Founded in 1974 in Hanover, it brings together engineers, architects, planners, technicians and other technical professions, as well as industry partners and service providers, around the shared goal of providing hospitals and other healthcare facilities with the best possible, future-oriented technical infrastructure as a foundation for successful core medical operations. The association is federally structured, organised into regional groups (Landesgruppen) that are in some cases subdivided into local groups (Regionalgruppen) — for example NRW-Süd, NRW-West, NRW-Mitte and Ostwestfalen-Lippe in North Rhine-Westphalia. Thematic project groups and specialist units (Referate) address specific topics. All organisational structures follow democratic procedures; regional group chairs are elected by the members of the respective group. FKT's activities centre on knowledge exchange and continuing education. It hosts an annual national congress (Bundesfachtagung) open to all members, organises events at the MEDICA trade fair in Düsseldorf, and runs regional and state-level conferences. Members receive access to a knowledge database on healthcare technology, benchmarks, guidelines and exclusive insider knowledge. The association also engages in shaping a practice-oriented legal framework for hospital technologies and maintains close ties with partner organisations and research institutions in Germany and worldwide. FKT is a member of the International Federation of Hospital Engineering (IFHE) and the European Association of Hospital Directors. It has around 1,600 members. Its office (Geschäftsstelle) is located in Unna, Germany. The association's project portfolio covers topics such as fire protection in hospitals, electrical installations, clinical energy, logistics, medical technology, senior experts, safety in healthcare, doors in healthcare, environment and hygiene, and science and research.
History
The Fachvereinigung Krankenhaustechnik e.V. (FKT) was founded in 1974 in Hanover, Germany. Its creation responded to the need for a dedicated platform for the exchange of practical experience among the senior technical staff of German hospitals and for the promotion of technical education and training. From the outset, the association pursued two central goals: giving practical experience a platform for exchange and fostering professional education and training. Over the decades, FKT grew into the largest German professional association for senior technical personnel in healthcare institutions. It developed a federally structured organisation with regional groups (Landesgruppen) and, in some cases, local groups (Regionalgruppen). For example, North Rhine-Westphalia has the regional groups NRW-Süd, NRW-West, NRW-Mitte and Ostwestfalen-Lippe. Thematic project groups and specialist units (Referate) were established for specific topics. All organisational structures are based on democratic procedures, with regional group chairs elected by the members of their respective groups. The association's event programme expanded to include an annual national congress (Bundesfachtagung) open to all members, events at the MEDICA trade fair in Düsseldorf, and regional and state-level conferences. At these conferences, hospital technicians, scientists and companies give presentations on the latest scientific advances, regulations and laws, and technical innovations. FKT also became active in international cooperation, joining the International Federation of Hospital Engineering (IFHE) and the European Association of Hospital Directors. Its project portfolio grew to cover topics such as fire protection in hospitals, electrical installations, clinical energy, logistics in healthcare facilities, medical technology, senior experts, safety in healthcare, doors in healthcare, environment and hygiene, and science and research. The association also engages in shaping a practice-oriented legal framework for the many technologies used in hospitals and maintains close ties with partner organisations and research institutions in Germany and worldwide. Today, FKT has around 1,600 members and its office (Geschäftsstelle) is located in Unna, Germany. It continues to provide its members with continuing education, a knowledge database on healthcare technology, benchmarks, guidelines and exclusive insider knowledge, supporting the shared goal of providing hospitals and other healthcare facilities with the best possible, future-oriented technical infrastructure.
