Overview

The Facultad de Ciencias Forestales de la Universidad Nacional Agraria La Molina (FCF-UNALM) is the forestry sciences faculty of the Universidad Nacional Agraria La Molina, a public agrarian university based in La Molina, Lima, Peru. It is one of the twelve specialized academic-professional schools of the university and is dedicated to generating information and technology for the use and management of Peru's forest resources. Nationally, the faculty maintains a leadership position in teaching, research and social outreach in the forestry field. The faculty was founded on 11 September 1964 with support from the United Nations Special Fund, through the Forestry Training and Research Project in Peru (FAO Project 116 UNDP). It was created to provide high-level forestry training aligned with the country's national reality. The first course was taught that same year, and the first graduating class was in 1965; those graduates were already professionals working in the field, most of them agricultural engineers. Over the past 50 years, with its own resources, the faculty has developed top-level teaching staff, equipment, laboratories and facilities that have contributed to forestry research, technical and higher education, and community outreach. The faculty is organized into two academic departments: the Department of Forest Industries, focused on wood transformation and its relationship with markets and the economy, with three academic areas (Mechanical Wood Transformation, Forest Utilization and Economics, and Chemical Wood Transformation); and the Department of Forest Management, focused on courses related to forest ecosystems, with three academic areas (Forest Planning and Evaluation, Dendrology, Ecology and Silviculture, and Wildlife and National Parks). The faculty has 42 professors, of whom 36 hold advanced master's (M.Sc.) and/or doctoral (Ph.D.) degrees. At the undergraduate level it offers 77 courses distributed across its academic departments. At the postgraduate level, the faculty administers four master's-level specialties: Conservation of Forest Resources; Forests and Forest Resource Management and Wood Engineering; and Ecotourism. In 1981, under dean Marc Dourojeanni and in collaboration with the Canadian embassy, the postgraduate program was developed. Today, in addition to distinguished UNALM professors, these programs include visiting Peruvian and foreign professors of recognized scientific and professional trajectory. The faculty owns and manages classrooms, laboratories, a council room, faculty offices, a nursery, a library, an auditorium and research centers nationwide. In addition to offices and administrative areas within the university campus in Lima, FCF-UNALM has the following laboratories: Anatomy and Identification of Woods; Dendrology and Herbarium; Wildlife; Machinery and Equipment; Wood Preservation; Pulp and Paper; Silviculture; Wood Technology; and Applied Remote Sensing and GIS. It also administers the Dantas Model Unit for Forest Management and Production (UMMPF-Dantas), located in the District of Yuyapichis, Province of Puerto Inca, Huánuco, with a surface area of 4,784 ha + 1,600 m² according to Resolution of the Superintendency of National Assets No. 263-2001 of 18 July 2001, published on 1 August of the same year. The faculty has an active tradition of student participation in academic and extracurricular life, with many students forming interest groups around environmental, forestry and arboriculture topics.
