Overview
FahnenFleck GmbH & Co. KG is a German manufacturer and supplier of flags, flagpoles, displays and other promotional materials, headquartered in Hamburg. Founded in 1882 by Maria Fleck, the company began by supplying flags for villas and representative buildings. Over more than 140 years it has grown into one of Germany's six largest and one of Europe's largest flag manufacturers, combining traditional embroidery and appliqué craftsmanship with modern production technology. The company operates as a 360-degree full-service provider: it advises private and corporate clients, designs and lays out artwork, produces flags and promotional items on modern machinery, and handles the installation and repair of complex advertising systems and flagpoles. Its product range includes flags, flagpoles, advertising displays, banners, merchandising articles, uniforms and medals. FahnenFleck also offers event outfitting for major events, city flagging services for municipalities, and warehousing and distribution services. FahnenFleck has supplied flags for high-profile events, including the 1968 Mexico City and 1972 Munich Olympic Games, the 2002 German Gymnastics Festival in Leipzig, and the 2010 FIFA World Cup in South Africa, for which it produced one million flags and 750,000 car flags for South Africa alone, as well as flags for Namibia and Botswana. It was an exclusive licensee for Expo 2000 in Hanover and the 800th Hamburg Harbour Birthday in 1989. Since 1994 it has been responsible for flagging public spaces in Hamburg. The company has been family-led for generations. Andreas Fleck took over management in 1987 and has led the business jointly with his nephew Eike Neumann since November 2017. From 1975 to 2013 the company was based in Pinneberg; in 2013 it moved back to Hamburg, and since April 2020 it has been located on Stresemannstraße in the Altona district. FahnenFleck has operated an online shop for commercial customers since 2019. Together with partner companies it develops patents, such as the durable flag fabric Strongoflag®, and it emphasizes ecological responsibility in its material choices.
History
FahnenFleck was founded in 1882 by Maria Fleck in Hamburg. Initially, the company supplied flags for villas and representative buildings, establishing a tradition of craftsmanship in flag making. Over the decades, it expanded its product range and capabilities, becoming known for high-quality embroidery and appliqué work. In 1968 and 1972, FahnenFleck was the official outfitter for the Olympic Games in Mexico City and Munich, respectively. In 1975, the company moved its headquarters to Pinneberg, where it remained until 2013. In 1987, Andreas Fleck took over the management of the business. In 1989, FahnenFleck was the exclusive licensee for the 800th Hamburg Harbour Birthday. In 1994, the company received a European patent for a machine that applies appliqués to flags using ultrasound, and it also became responsible for flagging public spaces in Hamburg that same year. In 2000, FahnenFleck was an exclusive licensee for the Expo 2000 in Hanover. In 2002, it outfitted the German Gymnastics Festival in Leipzig. In 2010, the company supplied flags for the FIFA World Cup in South Africa, producing one million flags and 750,000 car flags for South Africa, as well as flags for Namibia and Botswana. For distribution in South Africa, FahnenFleck founded FahnenFleck Merchandising GmbH with a 51% South African shareholder, and FahnenFleck South Africa (Pty) Ltd. in Wellington, South Africa. In 2013, the company moved its headquarters back to Hamburg. In November 2017, Andreas Fleck began leading the company jointly with his nephew Eike Neumann. In 2018, a separate company for party, costume and event articles in Hamburg, which had existed alongside the flag production business, became insolvent. In 2019, FahnenFleck launched an online shop for commercial customers. In April 2020, the company relocated to Stresemannstraße in the Altona district of Hamburg, where it is currently based. Throughout its history, FahnenFleck has developed patents with partner companies, such as the durable flag fabric Strongoflag®, and has emphasized sustainability in its material choices.
