Failsworth Hats

Failsworth Hats is a British hat manufacturer. The company was incorporated as 'The New Failsworth Hat Manufacturing Company' on 2 December 1903, having originally been founded in 1875 when it acquired the 'Maypole Hat Works', and it moved in 1881 to Claremont Street, Failsworth, Manchester. Its name was converted to Failsworth Hats Limited in 1940. The company produces felt hats, faux fur, fabric headwear, leather gloves, occasion hats, fascinators and headpieces, straw hats, scarves and hair accessories, and states that it uses British materials including pure new wools and cashmeres, Harris Tweed and waxed and oiled cottons from Scotland.

The company was incorporated under the name 'The New Failsworth Hat Manufacturing Company' on 2 December 1903. It had originally been founded in 1875 when it acquired the 'Maypole Hat Works', and in 1881 it moved to Claremont Street, Failsworth, Manchester. The name was finally converted to Failsworth Hats Limited in 1940. In 1903, from its Manchester premises, it produced 25 dozen hats per week; by the 1940s this had grown to 5,000 dozen hats per week, and during the Second World War it hand-crafted flying helmets for the RAF and 'special equipment' for commando frogmen. When demand for fur felt hats dwindled in the 1950s, the company had fabric variants ready as an alternative. At the end of the 1940s a major development was agreed with John B Stetson Company of the USA to manufacture, under licence, men's hats bearing the Stetson brand name.
