Overview

Fake Records is a Belgian independent record label, music publisher and artist management company based in Ghent, focused on Dutch-language hip-hop. It was founded in 2012 by the three rappers of the Ghent rap crew Uberdope, initially as an experiment to release their own music without depending on an established label. The first artists to sign with Fake Records were Brihang and Ntrek. Over the following decade the label grew into an established player in the Flemish music scene, combining young promising acts with more experienced names. Its roster has included Alois & VLB, Brihang, Gijs, Ntrek, Olsan, Puntjudith, Simon and Uberdope, while former artists include Spreej, Ikraaan and Bombataz. In 2020 the label won the Red Bull Electropedia Award for best label. Beyond releasing records, Fake Records operates as a music publisher and management office, and it also organises workshops for young people, providing educational and technical materials and matching acts from its roster with participants. Press kits with photos and up-to-date biographies are available through the artist pages on its website. The label continues to be run by the same founders who started it, and its stated philosophy remains unchanged: releasing Dutch-language hip-hop and guiding young talent in the early phase of their careers.

History

Fake Records was founded in 2012 in Ghent, Belgium, by the three rappers of the Ghent rap crew Uberdope. According to the label's own account, it began as an experiment: the members of Uberdope were looking for a way to release their own music independently, and the label grew out of that need. The first artists to sign with Fake Records were Brihang and Ntrek. In its early years the label established itself within the Dutch-language hip-hop scene in Flanders, releasing music by its founders and by a growing roster of affiliated acts. Over time the roster expanded to include Alois & VLB, Gijs, Olsan, Puntjudith and Simon alongside Brihang, Ntrek and Uberdope. Former artists include Spreej, Ikraaan and Bombataz. By the early 2020s the label described itself as an established value in the Belgian music landscape, with a roster made up of both young promises and experienced names. In 2020 Fake Records won the Red Bull Electropedia Award for best label, a recognition of its role in the Belgian scene. Beyond releasing records, Fake Records has operated as a music publisher and management office, and it organises workshops for young people, from one-off introductory lessons to longer guidance programmes, providing educational and technical materials. The label states that it is still run by the same founders who started it, and that its philosophy has remained unchanged: releasing Dutch-language hip-hop and supporting young talent in the early phase of their careers.
