Overview
The Falkenhütte is a managed alpine mountain hut (Kategorie I) owned and operated by the Sektion Oberland of the Deutscher Alpenverein (German Alpine Club, DAV), located in the Karwendel range in Vomp, Tyrol, Austria. It sits in the Falkengruppe chain, directly facing the dramatic Laliderer Wände and the Laliderer Spitze, between the Große and Kleine Ahornboden. The hut is a key staging point on the Via Alpina route through the Karwendel from Scharnitz to the Achensee, and serves as the base for the four-day "Karwendeltour". Built between 1921 and 1923 on the initiative of Adolf Sotier, then president of the Sektion Oberland, the Falkenhütte is a two-storey timber building with a staggered, rectangular footprint, a rubble-stone basement, a ground floor and a gabled roof. It has been a listed historic monument since 2016. The hut closed on 11 September 2017 for a comprehensive renovation and reopened no later than the start of the 2020 season; the official site describes the renovation as taking place in the years 2017 to 2020. Today the Falkenhütte offers traditional wood-panelled interiors, a cosy Stube and a sun terrace where the tenant family Rackwitz-Hartmann serves Tyrolean cuisine. It is accessible on foot or by mountain bike, as a day destination or an overnight stop, and lies within the Naturpark Karwendel. Activities around the hut include hiking, mountain biking, climbing, ski touring and snowshoeing, and the surroundings provide a natural adventure playground for children. Overnight stays must be booked exclusively online; outside the season an open winter room for eight people is available. The 2026 opening season runs from 12 June to 3 October.
History
The Falkenhütte was built between 1921 and 1923 on the initiative of Adolf Sotier, then president of the Sektion Oberland of the Deutscher Alpenverein. It was designed as a two-storey timber building with a staggered, rectangular plan, a rubble-stone basement, a ground floor and a gabled roof. The hut is located in the Falkengruppe chain in the Karwendel, facing the Laliderer Wände and the Laliderer Spitze, between the Große and Kleine Ahornboden. It quickly became an important base on the Via Alpina route through the Karwendel from Scharnitz to the Achensee. In 2016 the building was listed as a historic monument. On 11 September 2017 the hut ceased operations for a comprehensive renovation, which according to the official website took place in the years 2017 to 2020. The hut reopened no later than the start of the 2020 season. The renovation preserved the traditional character of the hut while modernising its facilities. Today the Falkenhütte is operated by the tenant family Rackwitz-Hartmann, who serve Tyrolean cuisine on the sun terrace.
