Overview

Famiglia Comasca is a non-profit, non-partisan cultural association based in Como, Italy. It was founded on 29 March 1969 by twelve friends, brought together by Piero Collina, a dialect poet and author of a version of 'The Betrothed' in the Como vernacular. The association is headquartered at Via Bonanomi 5 in Como and has operated continuously since its founding, sustained by membership fees and sponsors such as BCC di Lezzeno. The association's mission, set out in Article 3 of its statute, is to safeguard, defend, revive and pass on the values testified by the people of Como in language, customs, civil and religious history, literature, art, science and economic activities. It also seeks to enhance what is beautiful, useful and characteristic of the Como area, both locally and among Comaschi abroad, and to increase knowledge, interest and love for the Como area among residents and visitors. To these ends, Famiglia Comasca promotes, supports and organises studies and publications of Como interest — in particular the documentation and codification of the dialect, including its lexicon, norms and written form — as well as conferences, debates, meetings, interpretive readings, and the collection of documents, publications, artworks and memorabilia related to Como life. It also works to defend the cultural, artistic and monumental heritage of the territory, including through restoration projects. The association publishes volumes for its members each Christmas and maintains an active calendar of cultural events, including concerts, dinners, dialect crossword events and lectures. It communicates with members through its website, Facebook page and YouTube channel, where full recordings of its New Year's concerts and other evenings are made available. Membership is open through an annual tessera (membership card).

History

Famiglia Comasca was founded on 29 March 1969 in Como by twelve friends, brought together by Piero Collina, a dialect poet and author of a version of 'The Betrothed' in the Como vernacular. The association was established as a non-partisan, non-profit cultural organisation with the aim of preserving and promoting the history, customs, art and all aspects of Como's culture and social life. From its founding, the association has been sustained by membership fees and the support of sponsors, including BCC di Lezzeno. Its statute, particularly Article 3, sets out its core purposes: to safeguard, defend, revive and pass on the values testified by the people of Como in language, customs, civil and religious history, literature, art, science and economic activities; to enhance what is beautiful, useful and characteristic of the Como area, both locally and among Comaschi abroad; and to increase knowledge, interest and love for the Como area among residents and visitors. To achieve these goals, Famiglia Comasca has organised and supported studies and publications of Como interest, with a particular focus on the documentation and codification of the dialect — including its lexicon, norms and written form — as well as the research and documentation of characteristic linguistic and melodic expressions. It has also held conferences, debates, meetings (including convivial ones), and interpretive readings, and has collected documents, publications, artworks and memorabilia related to Como life. The association has also worked to defend the cultural, artistic and monumental heritage of the territory, including through restoration projects. Over the decades, Famiglia Comasca has become a point of reference for Como's cultural life. It publishes volumes for its members each Christmas and maintains a busy calendar of events, including New Year's concerts, dialect crossword evenings, lectures and dinners. It communicates with its members and the public through its website, Facebook page and YouTube channel, where full recordings of its concerts and evenings are made available. The association continues to operate from its headquarters at Via Bonanomi 5 in Como.
