Overview
Family Media GmbH & Co. KG is a German publishing house specialising in children's and family titles for the German-speaking market. It was established in January 2004 as a 50/50 joint venture between Axel Springer AG of Berlin and OZ-Verlags GmbH of Rheinfelden (Baden). The company is headquartered in Rheinfelden (Baden), having moved there in 2020 from Freiburg im Breisgau, where it had been based for most of its existence. Family Media publishes family magazines such as Familie&Co, Baby&Co, KINDERZEIT and VEGAN für mich, as well as book series under the Velber brand in the family guide and educational children's book segments. Its portfolio is aimed at parents, families and children, combining service journalism with book publishing. In July 2009, publisher Christian Medweth, who together with his brother Michael is sole owner of OZ Verlags GmbH, acquired Axel Springer AG's 50 percent stake in Family Media, becoming the sole shareholder of the publishing house. The company has since operated as an independent private publisher within the Medweth family's OZ group. Like many print publishers, Family Media faced a long-term decline in circulation and a difficult advertising market. In 2012 and 2013 this led to staff reductions and the discontinuation of titles including Spielen und Lernen, Lillebi, spiel mit and Treff, as well as a reduced print run for Baby & Co. At its Freiburg site the company employed around twelve people as of June 2013. In 2020 the business relocated from Freiburg to Rheinfelden. Today Family Media remains a privately held publisher focused on the German-speaking family and children's media market, with its titles distributed in Germany, Austria and Switzerland.
