Overview
Fanfarenzug Potsdam is a German fanfare corps (Fanfarenzug) based in Potsdam, the capital of Brandenburg. It was founded on 30 June 1963 with five young members and grew into one of the most decorated ensembles in the field of natural fanfare music. During the GDR era it competed as the Fanfarenzug „Dr. Richard Sorge“ within the sports community SG Dynamo „F.E. Dzierzynski“ Potsdam, and from 1970 to 1990 it took part in the GDR championships for fanfare corps, winning the title eleven times — the only ensemble ever to hold that title. After German reunification the group continued to compete internationally and became Germany's most successful fanfare corps, winning world championships in 1996, 2009, 2012 and 2015. The corps is organised as a non-profit registered association, SG Fanfarenzug Potsdam e.V., and is active in the musical education of children, young people and adults, with a stated goal of integrating people with disabilities into club life. Its repertoire ranges from arrangements of festive fanfare music and march music to modern entertainment music. The ensemble has performed more than 3,000 times in Potsdam and the surrounding area, across Brandenburg and throughout Germany, and has represented Germany at international competitions in Austria, Belgium, Canada, the United Kingdom, Australia, Italy, Denmark and the Netherlands. Fanfarenzug Potsdam remains closely tied to the local sporting and cultural community; its official website highlights its association with ESV Lokomotive Potsdam and its ongoing youth work, rehearsals and public performances. The corps celebrated its 50th anniversary in 2013 and continues to compete in events such as the Fanfaronade, the open championships of the Märkischer Turnerbund, and the World Music Contest in Kerkrade.
History
Fanfarenzug Potsdam was founded on 30 June 1963 with five young members. In July 1969, at the invitation of the Spielmannszug section of the DTSB, the group performed at the GDR Turn- und Sportfest in Leipzig's Zentralstadion in front of 100,000 spectators. From 1970 to 1990 the ensemble took part in the GDR championships for fanfare corps and won the championship title eleven times, making it the only holder of that title. During this period it was known as the Fanfarenzug „Dr. Richard Sorge“ of SG Dynamo „F.E. Dzierzynski“ Potsdam. After the political changes in 1990, the corps continued its success story. From 1991 it competed in international fanfare competitions, including the Bundesturnfest in Austria (1991), Lage Landen in Hamont, Belgium (1994, 1996, 2000, 2002, 2008), the Calgary Stampede Parade in Canada (1996), events in the United Kingdom (1998), the WAMSB World Championship in Australia (1999), Italy (2003) and the Danish Open in Copenhagen (2007). It also participated four times in the WMC Kerkrade in the Netherlands, achieving mid-to-front placements. The corps won the WAMSB world championship in 1996 (Calgary), 2009 (Kerkrade), 2012 (Calgary) and 2015 (Copenhagen). The association is active in the musical education and further training of children, young people and adults, and aims to integrate people with disabilities into club work. It organises cultural and leisure events. As of 2007 the repertoire of its 100 wind players and drummers ranged from arrangements of festive fanfare music and march music to modern entertainment music. In 2008 the corps won the Märkischer Turnerbund championship in the march and show classes of the FANFARONADE, and in the same year welcomed its 4,000th member. In 2013 the ensemble celebrated its 50th anniversary. The years 2013 to 2020 saw further travels and competitions, although the association notes that its historical documentation for this period is incomplete. The corps continues to compete regularly in the Fanfaronade and other events.
