History
Farmak's history traces back to 1925, when the first plant in Ukraine for the production of synthetic medicines was opened — the Kyiv Chemical-Pharmaceutical Plant named after M. V. Lomonosov (KHFZ), which later became the joint-stock company Farmak. At the beginning of the 20th century, the production of synthetic medicines and raw materials was almost absent, and these medicines were imported; with the start of the First World War imports stopped and medicines and medical products became scarce, making domestic pharmaceutical production essential. In 1925–1941, a team of 42 workers and 12 engineering-technical employees under the leadership of Professor I. V. Yehorov established production and developed technologies for synthesizing the first products — chloroform and salicylic acid. In December 1925 the plant first produced 790 kg of technical resorcinol and 205 kg of salicylic acid. In 1937 the plant mastered the production of medical resorcinol, which came to be used throughout the USSR. Despite a catastrophic shortage of professional staff and modern equipment, the plant managed to establish the manufacture of 15 medicines. During 1941–1945, after the advance of German-fascist forces began, the plant (a team of 30 workers and part of the equipment) was evacuated — first to Voroshylovhrad (present-day Luhansk) and then to Kazan. After construction work and installation of technological equipment brought from Kyiv were completed, production began of necessary screens for X-ray installations and of preparations of chloroethyl, streptocide and trypaflavine — products needed by military hospitals, especially those on the front line.
