The company is headquartered in Osterholz-Scharmbeck, Lower Saxony, and is part of the Kirchhoff Group. Its origins date back to 1845, when Justus Christian Braun founded a foundry in Nuremberg. The French operation employs around 400 people and generates revenue in the order of €140 million. In 2008, Faun Umwelttechnik as a whole had 1,052 employees and a turnover of €243 million. The brand remains active in the European waste management equipment market, continuously introducing digital and automation features to its vehicles.
History
The history of Faun Umwelttechnik begins in 1845, when Justus Christian Braun founded a foundry in Nuremberg, Germany. The company initially produced brass castings, including bells. From 1860, it specialised in fire-extinguishing systems, building fire engines with which Braun achieved commercial success. In 1890, Braun's sons, Christian Sigmund and Johann Friedrich Emanuel, transformed the family business into a joint-stock company. The first vehicle designed for refuse collection was built in 1897, and in 1908 the company launched its first vehicles for street cleaning as well as refuse collection. From 1906, the company focused on motorised fire-fighting vehicles and other utility vehicles. In 1909, Faun acquired the insolvent German automobile manufacturer Maurer-Union, which produced cars and trucks. In 1911, the company faced serious financial difficulties and was only saved by a capital injection from the British bicycle and motorcycle manufacturer The Premier Cycle Company Ltd., which had a branch in Nuremberg-Doos. The company was then renamed Justus Christian Braun-Premier-Werke AG. In 1913, the company filed for bankruptcy and was managed by a receiver until the end of World War I. In 1914, all production was moved to the Karl Schmidt plant in Nuremberg, which merged in 1917 with Ansbach Automobile AG to form Fahrzeugfabriken Ansbach und Nürnberg AG, abbreviated to Faun Werke AG from 1920. During World War II, the FAUN plant suffered severe damage, and it was not until 1946 that refuse collection vehicle production resumed. In 1969, the troubled German truck manufacturer Büssing AG, allied with its main customer MAN (which took it over in 1971), sold its Osterholz-Scharmbeck plant to Faun Werke AG. In 1973, production of refuse collection vehicles was relocated to Osterholz-Scharmbeck. In 1994, the special vehicles division (refuse collection and sweepers) was acquired by the Kirchhoff Group. The company name changed to Faun Umwelttechnik GmbH & Co. KG one year later. In France, FAUN UT has been represented by FAUN Environnement since 1995, following the Kirchhoff Group's takeover of the French company Carrosseries Granges Frères, founded in Valence in 1922. The French subsidiary employs around 400 people and generates revenue of approximately €140 million. Its production site in Ardèche covers an area of 13,000 m². In 2008, Faun Umwelttechnik had 1,052 employees and a turnover of €243 million.
