Overview

The Federación Española de Amigos de los Museos (FEAM) is a Spanish non-profit organization created in 1983 to unite and represent the country's museum friends associations, foundations and programmes. Its principal promoters were members of the Asociación de Amigos de los Museos de Cataluña and the Fundación de Amigos del Museo del Prado, who saw the need for a national federation that would bring together associations with the same purpose and represent them within the World Federation of Friends of Museums (WFFM). FEAM has been a full member of the WFFM since its foundation; the WFFM groups friends federations from 28 countries with more than two million members. FEAM describes itself as a non-profit association working to strengthen museum friends associations, foundations and programmes in Spain. It represents around one hundred institutions with more than 70,000 individual friends of museums. Its stated functions include acting as ambassador for the friends movement before public administrations and other sectors of society, raising awareness of the contribution of friends to the conservation of and access to heritage, promoting greater recognition and support for friends associations, encouraging the creation of new associations and advising on their constitution and management, facilitating relations and collaboration among member entities, disseminating their initiatives, and organizing forums for training and the exchange of experience. FEAM is governed by Spain's Ley Orgánica 1/2002 regulating the right of association and by its own statutes, and it follows the Código Ético Deontológico de Oaxaca (Mexico). It is declared of public utility and was awarded the Medalla de Oro al Mérito en las Bellas Artes in 2014. Its headquarters are at Avda. Reyes Católicos 6, 28040 Madrid. It publishes a magazine, Amigos de Museos, maintains a newsletter, and organizes national congresses and other events for its member associations.
