Overview

The Federación Española de Familias Numerosas (FEFN) is an independent, non-profit organization declared of Public Utility in Spain, dedicated to the defense and protection of large families. Founded in 1967, it is the oldest family association in the country. The FEFN brings together more than 50 associations spread throughout Spain, which work together to achieve greater social recognition and protection for these families. Its mission is to represent the voice of large families before public administrations and to improve their quality of life through public and private benefits, under the motto 'para que ser más cueste menos' (so that being more costs less). The FEFN's work intensified from 1998, when José Ramón Losana assumed its presidency. In 1999, all large-family associations in Spain integrated into the FEFN, adopting a structure similar to the country's autonomous communities model, grouping associations into regional federations and associations. Since 1998, the FEFN has organized national congresses of large families every two years, analyzing family policies from different countries and proposing improvement projects. In 2002, the FEFN launched the Plan + Familia, through which major private-sector companies offer discounts on their services and products to large families associated with any of the member associations. This project also includes employment support to implement Law 40/2003 on the Protection of Large Families. On 14 January 2006, Eva Holgado Pascual was elected president of the federation and was re-elected in 2012. The FEFN operates primarily through membership: families join through their regional associations and gain access to a universe of advantages and discounts at hundreds of establishments and commercial brands. The organization also provides information on rights, economic and social benefits under the Large Families Law, and runs campaigns such as the Alianza por la Crianza (Alliance for Parenting), which calls for urgent support for families facing the rising costs of back-to-school season. It engages with government ministries on issues such as the social bonus within the new Strategy against Energy Poverty. The FEFN is headquartered in Madrid and maintains an active online presence through its website and social media channels.

History

The Federación Española de Familias Numerosas (FEFN) was created in 1967 and is the oldest family association in Spain. Its work increased from 1998, the year José Ramón Losana assumed its presidency (he died on 9 June 2005). In 1999, all large-family associations in Spain integrated into the FEFN, adopting a structure similar to the autonomous communities model established in the Spanish state, thus bringing together associations into regional federations and autonomous associations of large families. Since 1998, the FEFN has organized national congresses of large families on a biennial basis, in which family policies from different countries are analyzed and projects for their improvement are proposed. These congresses have counted on the participation of the Minister of Labour and Social Affairs in all editions, except the last one, held in Madrid on 26 November 2006. The Congress of Santiago de Compostela, held in February 2004, counted on the participation of the then candidate for prime minister, José Luis Rodríguez Zapatero, whose proposals were received with great expectation. In 2002, the FEFN promoted the birth of the project called Plan + Familia, under which important private-sector companies offer discounts on their services and products to large families associated with any of the large-family associations integrated in the FEFN. Thanks to this project, thousands of Spanish families can face their daily development with more solvency, since Plan + Familia represents considerable savings for them in different sectors. At the same time, the project also includes employment support, to make effective the fulfillment of Law 40/2003 on the Protection of Large Families, which establishes labour benefits for members of large families in its First Additional Provision. On 14 January 2006, Eva Holgado Pascual was elected president of the Spanish Federation of Large Families, and in 2012 she was re-elected.
