Overview

The Federal Association of the German Fish Industry and Fish Wholesalers (Bundesverband der deutschen Fischindustrie und des Fischgroßhandels e. V.) is a German trade association based in Hamburg. It represents the professional interests of around 120 companies active in fish processing, fish wholesale and fish importing in Germany. Membership is open to any legally independent company operating in the fish industry, fish wholesale, or the import of fish and seafood. The association traces its origins to 1903, when the "Verein der Fischindustriellen Deutschlands e. V." was founded. After several reorganizations and name changes, it took its current name in 1973 following the admission of coastal fish wholesale companies. Its members are manufacturers, wholesalers and importers in the product areas of fish, crustaceans and molluscs. The association's stated goals are to promote and protect the common interests of its member companies. A central task is representing members' interests before the state and other public and private institutions. It also provides advice on relevant matters and fosters the exchange of economic and technical information in the fish industry and fish wholesale, covering areas such as raw fish supply, customs matters, food law and food quality, nutrition, sales promotion and statistics, and it works to uphold fair competition. The association is affiliated with several other organizations, including the Lebensmittelverband Deutschland e. V., the Bundesvereinigung der Deutschen Ernährungsindustrie e. V. (BVE), the Bundesmarktverband der Fischwirtschaft e. V. (BMV), the Forschungskreis der Ernährungsindustrie e. V. (FEI), the Fisch-Informationszentrum e. V. (FIZ), and the European umbrella organization Seafood Europe – European Fish Processors and Traders Association in Brussels. It also participates actively in the "Forum für nachhaltige Fischerei und Aquakultur" of the Bundesmarktverband der Fischwirtschaft e. V. In 2008 it initiated the "Genauere Fanggebietskennzeichnung" (more precise fishing area labelling) initiative, which aims to label the origin of fish products more precisely than statutory requirements demand.

History

The association's history begins in 1903 with the founding of the "Verein der Fischindustriellen Deutschlands e. V." In 1934, the "Wirtschaftliche Vereinigung der Fischindustrie Deutschlands" was established. In 1935, it was transferred into the "Hauptvereinigung der deutschen Fischwirtschaft". In 1947, the "Fachverband Fischindustrie e. V." was founded, followed in 1952 by the "Bundesverband der deutschen Fischindustrie e. V." In 1973, the association changed its name to "Bundesverband der deutschen Fischindustrie und des Fischgroßhandels e. V." after admitting companies from the coastal fish wholesale sector. Today it is based in Hamburg and represents around 120 companies in fish processing, fish wholesale and fish importing.
