Overview
Fehérkőlápa Tourist House (Hungarian: Fehérkőlápai turistaház) is a mountain lodge and restaurant located on the Bagoly-hegy in the Bükk Mountains, near Lillafüred in Miskolc, Hungary. It sits at an elevation of about 586–587 metres above sea level, roughly 500 metres from the Fehér-kő rock outcrop that offers panoramic views over Lillafüred, and about one kilometre from the upper station of the Lillafüred chairlift opened in 2015. The house is accessible only on foot or via dirt roads, for example from Bükkszentkereszt, as no asphalt road leads to it. The building was constructed in 1937. After World War II it was operated by the Turistaellátó Vállalat (Tourist Supply Company) until that company ceased in 1975, after which it served as a keyed hut of the Diósgyőri VTK sports association. In 2000 it reopened as a family business. Since then the operators have added a bread-baking oven, become active in organising sports life, and entered equestrian tourism. From 2021 the house has offered 11 new en-suite rooms, and it actively supports cycling tourism. In 2022, based on public votes on the Aktív Magyarország portal, it won the Tourist House of the Year recognition. The lower level contains a lounge and restaurant, while the upper level has 11 comfortable rooms. The house is supplied with water from the Szent István spring 120 metres away, developed by the Bányabükki royal forest office; the spring's coat of arms was replaced in 2020, restoring the old Hungarian royal inscription and the Hungarian Crown, with the old carved plaque displayed in the courtyard. The house offers homemade syrup made without additives from real fruit, flowers and herbs, and bread baked on site. It is a well-known hiking and nature destination in the Bükk region.
History
Fehérkőlápa Tourist House was built in 1937 on the Bagoly-hegy in the Bükk Mountains, at an elevation of about 586 metres, near the well-known Fehér-kő viewpoint above Lillafüred. The name “lápa” is thought to derive from the word “lába” (foot), referring to the slope of the hill that must be climbed to reach the site. After World War II, the house was operated by the Turistaellátó Vállalat (Tourist Supply Company) until that company was dissolved in 1975. It then functioned as a keyed hut (kulcsosház) of the Diósgyőri VTK sports association. In 2000 it reopened as a family business. The operators built a bread-baking oven beside it, became actively involved in organising sports life, and joined equestrian tourism. From 2021 the house has offered 11 new en-suite rooms, and it actively supports cycling tourism. In 2022, based on public votes on the Aktív Magyarország portal, it won the Tourist House of the Year recognition. The house is supplied with water from the Szent István spring 120 metres away, which was developed by the Bányabükki royal forest office; in 2020 the spring's coat of arms was replaced, restoring the old Hungarian royal inscription and the Hungarian Crown, and the old carved plaque is displayed in the courtyard.
