Overview

The Fekete-hegyi turistaház (also known locally as Sasfészek, 'Eagle's Nest', or the Berda József kulcsosház) is a traditional mountain hut and keyed tourist house in the Pilis hills of Hungary. It stands at 574 metres on the Fekete-hegy (Black Hill), within the administrative area of Esztergom, between Kesztölc and Pilisszentlélek, and forms part of the Duna–Ipoly National Park. The two-storey building has served hikers since 15 October 1933, when it was opened by the city of Esztergom and the Esztergom Branch of the Hungarian Tourist Association. Because access and maintenance from Esztergom proved difficult, the house was soon handed over to the Jószerencsét Asztaltársaság of Dorog, and since 1938 it has served the Dorog hiking section. It suffered serious damage during the Second World War and was rebuilt afterwards, largely through the efforts of Hír József, leader of the Dorog hiking section, with support from the Dorog mining company and many volunteers. By the early 1950s it had taken its present form, and in 1952 it came into the management and ownership of the Dorogi Bányász SK. Over the decades many sports and nature enthusiasts were associated with the hut, including Hír József, Pick József, Szabó István, Papp Károly, Mocsnik László and Kardos Jenő; among the caretakers, the legendary 'Gizi néni' became inseparable from the house. Today the hut is managed by the Pilisi Parkerdő Zrt. and operated by the Pilis Természetjáró Szakosztály of the Dorogi Egyetértés SE. In 2014 it was renovated with a 25 million forint investment: the roof was replaced, the walls insulated, a kitchen and washroom were installed, a new tiled stove was built, and new furniture was provided. Electricity is supplied by solar panels and a generator. The Sasfészek remains very popular with both serious hikers and casual excursionists, and Dorog sports clubs and the board of the Dorogi Szénmedence Sportjáért Közalapítvány often hold meetings here. As accommodation, it is available to anyone by prior reservation in every season, offering 12 beds in an upstairs dormitory and on the ground floor. Heating is provided by a tiled stove downstairs and an iron stove upstairs. The kitchen is equipped with a gas ring and a refrigerator. There is no hot water, and the toilet is located 30 metres from the building in the forest. The upstairs terrace offers a fine view of Esztergom. The hut can be reached from Kesztölc via the green square, or the green stripe and green cross, and from Pilisszentlélek via the green square and green cross hiking marks. The walls are decorated with memorial plaques, one of which commemorates the poet Berda József, who visited on his last hike and from whose poem about the Pilis a quotation is inscribed: 'Felejthetetlen Feketehegyünk a Pilis szívében-közepében mikor mehetek fel hozzád megint?'

History

The Fekete-hegyi turistaház was built jointly by the city of Esztergom and the Esztergom Branch of the Hungarian Tourist Association, and has stood at the service of tourists since 15 October 1933. It was erected at 574 metres on the 585-metre Fekete-hegy. Because access and maintenance from Esztergom proved difficult, it was soon handed over to the Jószerencsét Asztaltársaság of Dorog, and since 1938 it has served the Dorog hiking section. During the Second World War the area saw heavy and prolonged fighting, and the house suffered serious damage. After the war it was rebuilt. The main organiser of the works was Hír József, leader of the Dorog hiking section, who, with the support of the Dorog mining company and many volunteers, carried out the construction and development in several stages, so that by the early 1950s the house had gained its new form. In 1952 it came into the management and ownership of the Dorogi Bányász SK. Over its history many sports and nature enthusiasts played significant roles; alongside Hír József, the names of Pick József, Szabó István, Papp Károly, Mocsnik László and Kardos Jenő deserve mention. Among the caretakers, the legendary 'Gizi néni' became completely intertwined with the tourist house. In 2014 the house, managed by the Pilisi Parkerdő Zrt., was renovated with a 25 million forint investment: the roof was replaced, the walls insulated, a kitchen and washroom were created, a new tiled stove was built, and new furniture was provided. Electricity is supplied by solar panels and a generator. Today the house is operated by the Pilis Természetjáró Szakosztály of the Dorogi Egyetértés SE, and it remains a popular destination for hikers and excursionists, as well as a venue for meetings of Dorog sports clubs and the board of the Dorogi Szénmedence Sportjáért Közalapítvány.
