Overview

FELDER GROUP is an Austrian mechanical engineering company headquartered in Hall in Tirol, Austria. Founded in 1956 by Johann Felder and his wife, the company has specialized in the development and production of woodworking machinery for over six decades. Its product range, marketed under the brands Felder, Format4, Hammer, and Mayer, is exported through more than 270 sales outlets in 84 countries. The company began in a workshop in the founder's parents' house in Absam, Tyrol, and has grown into a global player in the woodworking machinery sector. The Felder Group's history is marked by continuous expansion and innovation. Early exports to Switzerland began in 1962, followed by the first series production of the BU 4 combination machine in 1963. The company moved to its current location in Hall in Tirol in 1982 with 65 employees. In 1988, the first subsidiary, Felder Scandinavia, was founded in Stockholm. The 1990s saw the introduction of the world's first combination machines with a sliding table saw, the launch of the Hammer brand for the low-price segment in 1997, and the premium brand Format4 in 2001. The product portfolio expanded to include CNC machining centers, edgebanders, panel saws, and heating plate presses. In 2000, the sole proprietorship Johann Felder was converted into a limited partnership (KG) and became a family business with the participation of family members. The company continued to invest in its facilities, expanding its production and logistics areas. By 2018, the factory's usable area exceeded 81,000 m². In 2019, the Otto Mayer Maschinenfabrik, with its production site in Lombach, Germany, became part of the Felder Group, adding panel saws for wood, metal, and plastic processing to its portfolio. Today, the Felder Group remains a family-owned business, developing and producing woodworking machines for craftsmen, trade, and industry. Its brands include Felder, Format4, Hammer, Mayer, Felder Components, Silent-Power, c-tech, F4Solutions, PCS, and the World4Machines marketplace. The company has received numerous awards, including the Bavarian State Prize in 1983 and 1991, the iF Design Award in 2003 and 2009, and the Adolf Loos State Prize for Design in 2004.

History

The Felder Group was founded in 1956 by Johann Felder and his wife in a workshop in his parents' house in Absam, Tyrol, under the name Johann Felder jun. In the same year, the first woodworking machines were presented at trade fairs in Vienna and Innsbruck. Due to an inadequate supply of cast parts, the company set up its own foundry in the garden of the house in 1958. In 1961, Salzbergstraße 26 in Absam became the new location of the machine manufacturer. The first exports to Switzerland followed in 1962, and a year later the first series production of the BU 4 combination machine was achieved. An automatic molding sand plant was integrated into the 2,000 m² foundry in 1975, and two years later the outsourcing of machine assembly to a new production building led to further expansion. In 1979, the company installed its first CNC milling machine. In 1982, the company relocated again, with 65 employees, to its current site in the Industriezone Hall-Thaur in Hall in Tirol. In 1988, Johann Felder founded the first subsidiary, Felder Scandinavia, in Stockholm. With the new production capabilities, the production of the world's first combination machines with a sliding table saw followed in 1990. In 1993, Felder opened its new EURO logistics center and founded the first Felder factory branch, which began operations in Upper Austria in 1995. In 1997, Felder created the Hammer brand for the low-price segment. The new assembly plant 2 was intended to further increase capacity. In 2001, another brand was introduced: Format4, a premium brand for trade and industry. In the following years, the product range was expanded to include CNC machining centers, edgebanders, panel saws, and heating plate presses. In 2000, the sole proprietorship Johann Felder was converted into a limited partnership (Kommanditgesellschaft) and, through the participation of family members, became the family business Felder KG. At the beginning of the new millennium, a new powder coating plant was built and put into operation. In 2005, the logistics center was expanded. In 2007, the production area was enlarged by 11,300 m² with the expansion of assembly hall 7 and the roof overhang 4.5. In 2009, the first CNC and edgebanding machines entirely developed and produced in Hall rolled off the production line. With the new production halls 1 and 8, the expansion of the office and logistics complex with over 1,600 m² of additional office space, and a 30-meter-high high-bay warehouse, the factory's usable area was expanded to over 81,000 m² by 2018. In 2019, the Otto Mayer Maschinenfabrik, with its production site in Lombach, Germany, became part of the Felder Group, bringing an expanded range of panel saws for wood, metal, and plastic processing into the worldwide service and sales network.
