Overview

Neuffer Fenster + Türen GmbH is a German manufacturer and retailer of windows, doors, sun protection and facade products, headquartered in Stuttgart. The company traces its origins to 1872, when Ludwig-Ulrich Neuffer acquired a 500-year-old glazier's workshop in Stuttgart's Bohnenviertel and founded the Gebr. Neuffer Fensterfabrik. Over the following century the firm supplied windows for major Stuttgart buildings such as the city hall, the Königsbau, the Old Castle and the Academy of Fine Arts, and it was appointed royal court glazier. In the post-war decades it concentrated on commercial and public-sector projects, including the wood-aluminium windows for the Daimler AG headquarters in Stuttgart-Möhringen. In 1995 the company ceased its own window and door production and began sourcing products through a network of manufacturers and suppliers. A decisive turning point came in 2013, when the brothers Michael and Philipp Neuffer split the business: Michael continued the traditional offline window trade as Gebr. Neuffer Fensterfabrik GmbH in Stuttgart-Wangen, while Philipp built up the e-commerce operation under Neuffer Fenster + Türen GmbH, running the online shop fensterversand.com. By 2015 the company reported turnover of more than 13.5 million euros, about 75 percent of it from the online shop, with roughly 80 percent of that from private customers and 20 percent from business customers. At the beginning of 2016 the Swedish investment firm Latour acquired 66.1 percent of the company, with the aim of accelerating internationalisation. At that time Neuffer had 24 employees, turnover of over 13 million euros and 3 percent profitability; by mid-2017 the workforce had more than tripled to over 60, the management board was enlarged and the offices in Kronprinzstraße were modernised. Today Neuffer sells made-to-measure windows, balcony, terrace and entrance doors in PVC, wood and aluminium, along with accessories such as roller shutters, window sills, canopies, insect screens and care products. It serves private and commercial customers worldwide through a network of trading partners and sales locations, with projects in Europe, the United States, Australia and Asia, and markets its products under the "Made in Germany" label.

History

The company was founded on 13 January 1872 by Ludwig-Ulrich Neuffer in Stuttgart, when he acquired the 500-year-old glazier's workshop "Glaserei Christian Schramm" in the Becherstraße am Hirschgraben, in the so-called Bohnenviertel. Under steadily growing turnover, Neuffer supplied windows for central buildings of the city, including the Stuttgart City Hall, the Königsbau, the Old Castle and the Academy of Fine Arts. On 24 January 1887 the founder was appointed "Hofglaser" (court glazier) by the court building office. The considerably expanded business moved in 1905 to larger premises in Stuttgart's Rosenstraße, the buildings of the wagon factory Wilhelm Wimpff and the neighbouring Kundensägerei Diffenbacher. Around this time Ludwig-Ulrich's two sons joined the firm: Oskar Neuffer after a long glazier apprenticeship and Albert Neuffer after completing a commercial education. In 1907 Ludwig-Ulrich Neuffer was awarded the title "Königlicher Hofglaser" (Royal Court Glazier) by the Württemberg court marshal's office. In 1913 Ludwig-Ulrich Neuffer developed a "Reformfenster" (reform window), patented as the "Neuffer-Doppelfenster" by the royal patent office under number D.R. 171244: in this design, inner and outer windows could be opened and closed together. Soon afterwards son Albert Neuffer developed the "Rekordfenster", a composite window variant with a particularly small sash spacing, and shortly after that the sliding window "System Neuffer", used mainly in hotels, hospitals and schools. From 1934 orders increasingly extended to extensive construction projects abroad. In 1943/44 the focus was on the production of standardised windows for residential and commercial buildings and of war-standard windows specified by the Reich commissioner. Because demand for Neuffer windows grew further during the Second World War and production sites were scattered, the premises soon became too small; in March 1955 the company moved to larger premises, a 6,500 m² site in Stuttgart-Wangen near the Neckar harbour, where all production facilities and the administration were consolidated. In 1966 Albert Neuffer jun., a grandson of Ludwig-Ulrich Neuffer, took over the management of the window factory, supported by his son Jörg Neuffer, who joined the firm after training in Switzerland, Sweden, the USA and Finland and also served on the board of the "Jungglaser" association. By 1972 the operation had grown to 150 employees and in the following decades was mainly active in the commercial project sector. One of the most prestigious orders in the company's history was the manufacture, delivery and installation of wood-aluminium windows for the Daimler AG headquarters in Stuttgart-Möhringen. In 1995 Michael Neuffer joined, and the company ceased its own production of windows and doors, sourcing products through a network of manufacturers and suppliers. In 2005 the brothers Michael and Philipp Neuffer, by then the fifth generation, took over as owners and managing directors of Neuffer Fenster + Türen GmbH. They separated at the beginning of 2013: Michael Neuffer has since continued the classic offline window trade as Gebr. Neuffer Fensterfabrik GmbH in Stuttgart-Wangen, while Philipp Neuffer initiated the company's expansion into an e-commerce business and its global shift to the internet. Since then he has operated the online shop fensterversand.com under Neuffer Fenster + Türen GmbH. As one of the first online shops for windows worldwide, the mid-sized company generated turnover of more than 13.5 million euros in 2015. Of this, 75 percent came from the online shop, which in turn consisted of about 80 percent revenue from private customers and around 20 percent from business customers. Today customers are advised and supported in buying windows through a network of trading partners and sales locations worldwide. In addition to orders in other European countries, projects are regularly handled in the USA, Australia and Asia. Neuffer relies on modern window technology with the designation "Made in Germany". Through the acquisition of 66.1 percent of the company shares by the Swedish investment firm Latour as of 1 January 2016, the company aims for even stronger internationalisation. At that time the company consisted of 24 employees, had turnover of over 13 million euros and 3 percent profitability; by mid-2017 the number of employees had tripled to over 60. In addition, the management board was enlarged, the offices in Kronprinzstraße were modernised and all departments (including Development, Marketing, Content Management) were expanded.
