Fermion

Fermion develops, manufactures and markets active pharmaceutical ingredients (APIs) to companies in the global generic market and under exclusive contracts to companies focusing on new chemical entities (NCEs). It is a fully owned subsidiary of Orion Corporation and headquartered in Espoo, Finland. Together with Orion Pharma it operates as a fully integrated contract development and manufacturing organization (CDMO) covering both drug substances and drug products, and all contract manufacturing services of Orion Group are marketed by Fermion. Its API product portfolio consists of over 30 generic APIs and over 10 NCEs, and its manufacturing sites and R&D facilities are located in Finland.

Fermion Oy was established in 1970 as a 50-50 joint venture of Rikkihappo Oy (the current Kemira Oyj) and Orion, aiming to manufacture penicillin and semisynthetic antibiotics as well as certain synthetic active ingredients. In 1971 Fermion acquired the Espoo active ingredient plant from Orion and began producing synthetic active ingredients in three shifts; in the first years the Espoo plant manufactured about 20 products. Fermion's main office and laboratory building was completed in Espoo in 1973, and its Hanko plant was completed in 1974 with a large fermenting plant for penicillin production and a small-scale chemical plant. In 1977 the fermenting plant was sold to Suomen Sokeri, after which manufacture of semi-synthetic antibiotics continued for a few years until production changed over completely to synthetic active ingredients. In 1981 Orion assumed full ownership of Fermion Oy and it became a business unit in Orion Group. The Hanko plant was expanded in 1988 and again in 2001. Following Orion's acquisition of Farmos Group in 1990, the Farmos chemical plant in Oulu became part of Fermion. The current Fermion Oy was incorporated in 2004, and a new bench scale department was completed in Espoo in 2005.
