The company was founded by Dr. Frederik Paulsen in Malmö, Sweden in 1950 under the name Nordiska Hormon Laboratoriet. The company changed its name to Ferring in 1954. Dr. Paulsen named the company after the inhabitants of the island of Föhr in Northern Germany, who were called 'ferringe'. Ferring became a pioneer in drug development based on natural peptide hormones produced by the pituitary gland.
