The company's history began approximately 70 years ago with the launch of SPONGOSTAN™, its first absorbable hemostatic gelatin sponge. Ferrosan A/S was founded in 1920 in Copenhagen by Niels Jacob Herman Weitzmann. The name 'Ferrosan' means 'healthy iron,' reflecting its early focus on iron supplements like Idozan. In 1947, Professor Jens Herman Bing's research on gelatine sponges as absorbable haemostatic agents led, in collaboration with Ferrosan, to the launch of SPONGOSTAN™ — the company's first haemostatic device. The product received CE approval in 1996 and U.S. FDA PMA approval in 1999. Ferrosan developed medicines, vitamins, and medical devices for decades, but in 2010 it refocused entirely on haemostasis, forming Ferrosan Medical Devices A/S. Today, with over 75 years of expertise, Ferrosan Medical Devices is a global leader in gelatin-based haemostatic and biopsy products, supporting healthcare professionals in more than 100 countries.
