Overview

Fighting Online Antisemitism (FOA) is an Israeli grassroots nonprofit organization founded in 2020 to combat antisemitism on social media. Its mission is to protect Jewish lives by stopping online antisemitism and incitement before it escalates into real-world violence. FOA operates by monitoring and reporting antisemitic posts across more than ten social platforms and in over eight languages, using a global network of volunteers and a proprietary AI solution. The organization also deactivates groups and bans accounts that violate social media policies. Beyond content removal, FOA empowers communities through educational programs, training workshops, and online activist bootcamps that teach participants how to identify and effectively report antisemitic content. It advocates for policy change by leveraging its analysis of antisemitic trends and real-world insights to push social media platforms to adopt policies that specifically address antisemitism and anti-Zionism. FOA is a "Trusted Flagger" on eight leading social networks and has been a catalyst in getting Meta to include "Zionist" as a racial slur in its hate speech policy. Since its founding, FOA has reported over 100,000 antisemitic posts on 10 social networks and in 10 languages, achieving a 40% average content removal rate on four leading social networks at the end of 2023. It has trained more than 5,000 educational program participants across Israel, Brazil, the US, Canada, Switzerland, the UK, and Australia, and conducted over 200 workshops in English, Spanish, Russian, Hebrew, and German. The organization has logged over 7,000 volunteer hours and partnered with 12 universities and 50 high schools in Israel. It opened a branch in France to operate within the European Union and is the only Israeli NGO to become a member of the International Network Against Cyber Hate (INACH). FOA was founded by attorney Nir Kaplan, deputy director of the regulation department at the Israel Hotel Association, and Tomer Aldubi, a journalist and senior lecturer on dealing with hate content online, formerly head of the academic program for combating antisemitism at the National Union of Israeli Students. The organization is led by Founder and Executive Director Tomer Aldubi, with a team including COO Josh Steele, Development Director Naomi Shapiro, Monitoring Director Barak Aharon, Volunteer Coordinator Melanie Chomik, and Global Project Manager Andrea Mifano. The board includes Nir Kaplan, Hadassah Schwartz, Neri Lavi, and Jacob Laviel Dallal.

History

Fighting Online Antisemitism (FOA) was established in 2020 against the backdrop of the COVID-19 pandemic, which saw a significant rise in hate speech online. The pandemic sparked conspiracy theories and misinformation that spread rapidly on social media, making these platforms the central arena for disseminating inciting content. In response to growing antisemitism and hate online, the organization was founded by attorney Nir Kaplan, deputy director of the regulation department at the Israel Hotel Association, and Tomer Aldubi, a journalist and senior lecturer on dealing with hate content online, formerly head of the academic program for combating antisemitism at the National Union of Israeli Students. FOA began by training an international community of volunteers from various countries. The organization's work is based on the IHRA (International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance) working definition of antisemitism for monitoring and reporting. It trains activists worldwide and promotes international and efficient removal of antisemitic content online. FOA also advances educational content through workshops, youth programs, and online educational modules, and collects data and analyzes trends. It publishes monthly reports on hate trends on social media, Holocaust distortion and denial, as well as ad hoc reports covering exceptional current events such as the murder of George Floyd and Operation Guardian of the Walls. Annually, FOA publishes a comprehensive monitoring report on antisemitic content across leading global social networks, segmented by social network, category, and geographic region. In the education sphere, FOA runs an online and frontal training and volunteering program for youth in Israel in grades 7-12 from all religions and sectors. Participants learn about racism and hate on social media, Holocaust denial and distortion, and differences between antisemitism in various countries and languages. This program is approved as a personal development and social involvement program by the Israeli Ministry of Education. FOA has achieved several notable milestones. It was a catalyst in getting Meta to include "Zionist" as a racial slur in its hate speech policy. It opened a branch in France to operate via the European Union and have more impact removing online antisemitism across Europe. FOA is a "Trusted Flagger" on 8 leading social networks, building close relationships with them to prioritize removal of antisemitic content. It has trained over 5,000 educational program participants across Israel, Brazil, the US, Canada, Switzerland, the UK, and Australia, and conducted over 200 workshops and educational programs in English, Spanish, Russian, Hebrew, and German. By the end of 2023, it reached a 40% average content removal rate on 4 leading social networks. FOA has reported over 100,000 antisemitic posts on 10 social networks and in 10 languages. It has trained the highest number of activists in Israel to monitor and report antisemitic content on social networks, partnered with 12 universities and 50 high schools in Israel, and its global volunteers have logged a total of 7,000 volunteer hours. It is the only Israeli NGO to become a member of the International Network Against Cyber Hate (INACH), which leads the European Commission in tracking and reporting hate content on social media. During the COVID-19 pandemic, FOA was instrumental in identifying online antisemitic trends and removing social media content with antisemitic tropes.
