Overview

Film Washi is a French photographic materials company launched in 2013 and based in Brittany, France, describing itself as the world's smallest company to produce photographic materials. It specializes in handcrafted film making and industrial film conversion, offering a range of unique and innovative films. Its activity began with film "W", a black and white handcrafted film hand-coated on a traditional Japanese paper known as Washi, and it also converts specialty films made in other factories into standard photographic formats.

History

Film Washi was founded in 2013 by Lomig Perrotin in a closet of his Parisian flat, and then in the family garage in Saint-Nazaire. The company grew while staying a one-man-business. Its facilities are now located in decommissioned French Army containers, somewhere in Brittany. The company's ethos is based on values of innovation, simplicity and ecology, and its adopted processes link it to the Maker and DIY movements, with recycling taking an important part in the making of films. Film Washi was born with film "W": a black and white handcrafted film that is hand-coated on a traditional Japanese paper known as Washi, inspired by the paper negatives of Henry Fox-Talbot (1841, Calotype) and the early Eastman paper rolls (1884, Translucene). Besides this artisanal activity, Film Washi offers specialty films made in other factories but reserved to a limited field of technical applications, and converts these films to standard photographic formats so they can be used in normal cameras. It also offers professional or individual clients the possibility to order specific, custom works.
