Overview

Film1 is a Dutch subscription television and video-on-demand brand devoted primarily to feature films. It was introduced on 1 February 2006 by Chellomedia, the content and television-services division associated with Liberty Global, as a replacement for the Canal+ premium television channels in the Netherlands. The launch also included Sport1, a sister pay-television service later known as Ziggo Sport Totaal. Film1 initially operated as a multi-channel premium package, combining a principal movie channel with additional services and later adding high-definition, time-shifted, genre-focused, and on-demand offerings. The service’s programming has included Dutch and international films, television premieres, series, documentaries, and concerts. Its channel architecture developed over time. Film1 Action was added in October 2008 with an emphasis on action, thriller, and horror titles. In January 2012, Film1 Series replaced the one-hour time-shift service Film1 Premiere +1, broadening the proposition beyond feature films. Film1 also announced an online GO service in September 2012 in cooperation with Tvinci, reflecting the wider shift from linear premium television toward authenticated streaming and multiscreen access. Film1’s portfolio changed again in 2012 when Film1 Festival was replaced by Sundance Channel in the Netherlands. The Sundance-branded service was later closed in August 2017 as Film1 placed greater emphasis on video-on-demand distribution. The brand’s channel and on-demand services have been made available through major Dutch distribution platforms, including digital cable, satellite, and IPTV. Depending on the provider, customers could access Film1 through set-top-box video-on-demand systems, mobile applications, websites, and operator platforms. Film1 has also been distributed through Amazon Channels in the Netherlands since November 2020. Ownership has changed several times. Liberty Global put Film1 up for sale in 2014 and agreed in March 2015 to sell it and its associated channels to Sony Pictures Television. That transaction was completed in July 2015. Sony Pictures Entertainment announced in May 2019 that the service would close on 1 August of that year, but a restart was announced in June 2019 after SPI International acquired Film1. The service therefore continued under SPI ownership, retaining its Dutch premium-film positioning while operating in a market increasingly shaped by streaming subscriptions, operator video-on-demand, and digital aggregation platforms.

History

Film1 began operations in the Netherlands on 1 February 2006. It was launched by Chellomedia, associated with Liberty Global, to replace the Canal+ premium television channels in the Dutch market. The service was introduced alongside Sport1 and was designed as a subscription television package offering recent and premium feature films, including Dutch and international productions and television premieres. The original proposition used several linear channels, supported by a high-definition version and a time-shifted version of the main service. The channel portfolio expanded in October 2008 with Film1 Action, aimed at action, thriller, and horror programming. In January 2012, Film1 Series replaced Film1 Premiere +1, changing the role of the time-shifted channel and adding a more explicit television-series component. Later that year, Film1 announced Film1 GO, an online service developed with Tvinci. This reflected the growth of internet-delivered television and the increasing importance of allowing subscribers to view content away from the traditional television set. Film1 also experimented with branded programming partnerships. In March 2012, Sundance Channel launched in the Netherlands by replacing Film1 Festival. Film1 Sundance remained part of the Dutch offering until 31 August 2017, when it was closed. The decision was associated with a stronger focus on Film1’s video-on-demand activities. Alongside its linear channels, Film1 developed on-demand access through distribution partners, including set-top boxes, operator video-on-demand systems, its website, and mobile applications. Distribution has largely depended on Dutch television and communications providers. Film1 channels and services have been available through digital cable operators such as Ziggo, Delta, and Caiway, satellite distribution through CanalDigitaal, and IPTV platforms including KPN, T-Mobile Netherlands, and Tele2 Netherlands. The service was not distributed through DVB-T. This operator-based model enabled Film1 to function both as a premium channel package and as a catalog-based video-on-demand service. The ownership structure changed in the middle of the decade. Liberty Global announced in July 2014 that Film1 had been put up for sale. In March 2015, Liberty Global agreed to sell Film1 and its associated channels to Sony Pictures Television, with the transaction completed in July of that year. Sony Pictures Entertainment later announced on 1 May 2019 that Film1 would close on 1 August. In June, however, the company’s continuation was announced after SPI International acquired Film1 and arranged its restart. The brand consequently remained active in the Dutch market under SPI ownership. Film1 continued adapting its distribution model as streaming aggregation developed. In November 2020, Amazon Channels became available in the Netherlands and included Film1 as an additional package. The brand’s development illustrates the transition of premium movie services from fixed linear channel bundles toward a hybrid model combining curated channels, operator video on demand, direct digital access, and third-party streaming platforms.
