Overview

Filmhaus am Spittelberg (officially Filmhaus. Kino am Spittelberg) is a single-screen arthouse cinema located at Spittelberggasse 3 in the Spittelberg district of Vienna, Austria. It originally opened in 1994 as a secondary venue of Stadtkino Wien under the name "Filmhauskino am Spittelberg." The cinema closed on 1 January 2017 due to budget cuts, but after a renovation of its foyer and bar area, it reopened on 6 April 2018 under its current name. The reopening was made possible after the Austrian Film Institute (ÖFI) sought a new operator and selected the team behind Filmcasino. The cinema has 100 seats and 4K projection. The programming focuses on European arthouse films, with daily screenings (2–5 per day) typically in original language with subtitles (OmU). It also regularly shows films from Asia, Latin America, and US independent cinema. Thanks to close cooperation with the film distributor Polyfilm, many of their titles are featured. Special series and events such as "Pride Special," "Filmhaus Kids," and "Director's Nights" complement the regular schedule. The cinema has also hosted the Klezmore Festival with silent film accompaniment since 2019. As part of the Stadtkino Wien group, Filmhaus am Spittelberg shares its website and organizational structure with Stadtkino Wien. The cinema is a key venue for Austrian film and a fixture of Vienna's independent cinema scene.

History

Filmhaus am Spittelberg opened in 1994 as a secondary venue of Stadtkino Wien, under the name "Filmhauskino am Spittelberg." It operated for over two decades as a single-screen arthouse cinema in Vienna's Spittelberg district. On 1 January 2017, the cinema closed due to budget cuts. The Austrian Film Institute (ÖFI) subsequently issued a call for a new operator, and the team behind Filmcasino was selected. The opening film was Lucky, the last film starring Harry Dean Stanton, directed by John Carroll Lynch.
