Overview
FilmScene is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit cinema organization in Iowa City, Iowa, founded in fall 2011 by Andy Brodie and Andrew Sherburne with the goal of bringing movies back downtown. It operates two venues with five screens (six counting the park) and shows more than 500 feature films annually, alongside filmmaker dialogues, panel discussions, and community events. Its mission is to challenge, inspire, educate, and entertain diverse communities through the shared discovery of film.
History
FilmScene began with a simple goal: to bring the movies back downtown. Founded as an organization by Andy Brodie and Andrew Sherburne in the fall of 2011, it focused early on building and connecting with the Iowa City film community through events such as Alloy Orchestra at The Englert Theatre and the Starlite Cinema open-air movie series in City Park, and formed a formal partnership with the University of Iowa's Bijou Film Board. In 2013, FilmScene endeavored to open a full-time cinema on the Pedestrian Mall in downtown Iowa City; following a year-long "Make a Scene" fundraising effort that included the Founders Circle initiative and a $90,000 IndieGoGo crowdfunding campaign, it opened the doors to its "Scene 1 Cinema" on Thanksgiving weekend 2013 with the help of over 1,000 supporters. Initial success on this single screen led to an expansion in 2015: The Screening Room, a 35-seat cinema, became its second screen and allowed FilmScene to become a sustainable multi-screen operation showcasing over 150 films annually.
