Overview

Fiolax is a product brand of the German specialty glass manufacturer SCHOTT AG, used for a family of borosilicate glass tubes intended for pharmaceutical primary packaging. The name derives from the Latin 'fiola' (vessel). The brand was registered in 1911 after Otto Schott developed a borosilicate glass tube particularly well suited to the production of ampoules. It remains one of SCHOTT's most important products at its Mitterteich site in Germany. Fiolax glass is a Type I borosilicate (neutral) glass of the highest hydrolytic class. Its high chemical resistance, tightness and strength make it suitable for storing sensitive pharmaceuticals, generics and modern biotech medicines, especially for parenteral applications. The glass is used to manufacture primary packaging such as ampoules, vials, cartridges (including for pen systems) and syringes. A brown (amber) variant offers effective protection for light-sensitive drugs. SCHOTT Tubing, the business unit responsible for Fiolax, offers glass tubes, rods and profiles from more than 60 specialty glass types for international growth markets including pharmaceuticals, industrial and environmental engineering, and electronics. Glass tubes are available with outer diameters from 0.9 to 460 mm and specific lengths from 0.3 mm to 10 m. SCHOTT operates production sites in Europe, South America and Asia with a total production capacity of more than 230,000 tonnes, making it one of the leading manufacturers of glass tubing. The FIOLAX® Academy provides comprehensive and individual training in glass for pharmaceutical packaging, supporting customers with in-depth knowledge along the entire value chain. SCHOTT also offers technical consulting, glass defect analysis and analytical laboratory services for pharmaceutical packaging through SCHOTT Pharma Services.

History

Fiolax was developed by Otto Schott, the founder of SCHOTT AG, who is regarded as the founder of modern glass science and a pioneer of the specialty glass industry. In 1911, Otto Schott developed a borosilicate glass tube that was particularly well suited to the production of ampoules. The glass was registered under the trademark Fiolax in the same year. The name is derived from the Latin 'fiola', meaning vessel. SCHOTT itself was founded in 1884 in Jena as the 'Glastechnisches Laboratorium Schott & Genossen'. In 1896, with the statute of the Carl Zeiss Foundation, SCHOTT received a sustainable corporate constitution. After the Second World War, in 1945, the management and specialists moved west with the 'train of 41 glassmakers'. Fiolax production became established at the Mitterteich site in Germany, where it remains one of SCHOTT's most important products. Over more than a century, Fiolax has evolved from a glass for ampoules into a family of Type I borosilicate glass tubes used for a wide range of pharmaceutical primary packaging, including ampoules, vials, cartridges (for pen systems) and syringes. Its high chemical resistance, tightness and strength make it suitable for sensitive pharmaceuticals, generics and modern biotech medicines, especially for parenteral application. An amber variant was introduced to protect light-sensitive drugs. Today Fiolax is part of SCHOTT Tubing, which offers glass tubes, rods and profiles from more than 60 specialty glass types for markets including pharmaceuticals, industrial and environmental engineering, and electronics. SCHOTT operates production sites in Europe, South America and Asia with a total capacity of more than 230,000 tonnes. The FIOLAX® Academy was established to provide training in glass for pharmaceutical packaging along the entire value chain.
