Overview

Wiener Börse AG, commonly known as the Vienna Stock Exchange, is the central infrastructure provider for Austria's capital market and a key gateway to global financial markets for the Central and Eastern European region. Founded in 1771 by Empress Maria Theresia as a compulsory exchange for state capital raising, it is one of the oldest stock exchanges in the world. The exchange operates the trading venues of Vienna and Prague, offering listing services for equity and debt instruments, market data distribution, index calculation for a dozen regional markets, and IT services for exchanges in Budapest, Ljubljana, and Zagreb. As a private, profit-oriented company, Wiener Börse AG combines a long tradition of trust and transparency with modern technology and customer-oriented services. Its stated ambition is to achieve greater growth than comparable exchanges. The exchange is the world's most liquid trading venue for Austrian companies and provides investors with fast, cost-effective trading and a broad product range. In recent years, Wiener Börse has expanded its international offering, including over 1,000 international stocks through its global market segment, and has strengthened its position in non-exchange transparency by acquiring a majority stake in North Data GmbH, a search engine for European company data. The exchange also maintains a podcast series and publishes regular market updates and press releases.

History

The Wiener Börse was founded in 1771 by Empress Maria Theresia as a compulsory exchange for state capital raising, following the French model. Initial efforts to establish an exchange had begun as early as 1761. In its early years, bonds, bills of exchange, and foreign currencies were traded. Exchange brokers, known as Sensale, ensured smooth trading and received a commission for their services. At that time, trading was conducted in person rather than electronically as it is today. The exchange as a central market guaranteed official price fixing as well as speed and security in transaction processing. In 1818, the Oesterreichische Nationalbank became the first joint-stock company listed on the Vienna Stock Exchange. One of its first shareholders was Ludwig van Beethoven, who acquired eight shares of the National Bank in 1819. In the mid-19th century, the Vienna Stock Exchange gained growing international prestige due to the political and economic importance of the Habsburg Monarchy. Company formations on a corporate basis increased during this time, especially in the transport and traffic sector, railways, and steamship companies. Shares of the Kaiser-Ferdinands-Nordbahn appeared on the price list on May 3, 1842, followed by shares of the Budweis-Linz-Gmunden Railway on June 10, 1842. Over the following centuries, the exchange evolved into a modern infrastructure provider. Today, Wiener Börse AG operates the trading venues of Vienna and Prague, offers listing services for equity and debt instruments, distributes market data, calculates indices for a dozen regional markets, and provides IT services to the national exchanges of Budapest, Ljubljana, and Zagreb. It is also involved in energy exchanges and clearing houses in the region. In recent years, the exchange has expanded its international offering, including over 1,000 international stocks through its global market segment, and acquired a majority stake in North Data GmbH, a search engine for European company data. The exchange celebrated its 250th anniversary in 2021.
