Overview

Fischerhütte is a mountain hut (Schutzhütte) located on the Hochplateau of the Schneeberg in Lower Austria, at an elevation of 2,049 metres above sea level. It is the highest refuge in Lower Austria and is operated by the Austrian Tourist Club (Österreichischer Touristenklub, ÖTK). The hut is a popular destination for hikers and families, accessible from the Hochschneeberg station of the Schneebergbahn cog railway in about 75 minutes, or via longer trails such as the Fadensteig from Losenheim. On clear days, the hut offers a panoramic view stretching from the Dachstein to Lake Neusiedl. The Fischerhütte was first built in 1885 by the Wiener Neustadt section of the ÖTK, fulfilling a wish expressed in 1802 by the naturalist Schultes for a safe and comfortable shelter on the Schneeberg. The original small wooden hut was named after the alpinist Fischer von Röslerstamm, whose son-in-law donated 100 Gulden. Over the decades, the hut was repeatedly enlarged and renovated. It burned down in June 1945 and was rebuilt in a smaller form by 1953. Subsequent expansions in 1963, 1991, and infrastructure improvements in 1975, 1981, and 2009 shaped its present appearance. Since 2008, the hut has been run by tenants Michael and Kathi Scheffer. The ÖTK Vienna central office currently manages the hut, having taken over from the Neunkirchen section due to the financial demands of maintaining the exposed structure. As a commercial offering, Fischerhütte provides food, drinks, and accommodation for visitors to the Schneeberg. It is a trademarked name and a well-known alpine hospitality brand within Austrian mountaineering circles. The hut is listed on the official website of the ÖTK's mountain huts and viewing towers, and it has a webcam accessible via Schneeberg.tv. The Fischerhütte remains an active and essential part of the Schneeberg hiking experience.

History

The Fischerhütte was built in the 19th century, fulfilling a wish expressed in 1802 by the naturalist Schultes, who wrote that a safe and comfortable hut on the Schneeberg was needed to make overnight stays on the summit less dangerous. On 19 July 1885, the Wiener Neustadt section of the Austrian Tourist Club (ÖTK) erected a small wooden hut near the Kaiserstein at an altitude of 2,049 metres. The alpinist Fischer von Röslerstamm donated 100 Gulden, giving the hut its name. The opening was reportedly attended by 520 people. Increasing tourism and the transport capacity of the cog railway led to repeated enlargements. In 1899, the hut, until then under the ÖTK Wiener Neustadt section, was taken over by the ÖTK central office. In June 1945, the hut, which had grown into a house, burned down to its foundations. Reconstruction required great financial sacrifice, and on 18 October 1953, a smaller version of the old Fischerhütte was opened. Further extensions and conversions followed: in 1963 the new building was doubled in size; in 1974 the ÖTK Neunkirchen section took over management and care; in 1975 the defective material cableway was dismantled and a supply path from the cog railway was created; in 1981 the hut received electric power and a telephone connection; the last extension in 1991 gave the hut its current appearance. In 2009, a water pipeline and sewer were laid to the hut, and an open WLAN hotspot for guests was installed. Due to its exposed location, constant repairs are still necessary. Because the constant conversions exceeded the financial means of the ÖTK Neunkirchen section, the ÖTK Vienna central office recently took over management again. From 1982, the Fischerhütte was run for 25 years by tenant Renate Berndorfer. Since 2008, Michael and Kathi Scheffer have operated the hut.
