Overview
Fizmatlit (Издательство физико-математической и технической литературы) is one of the principal Soviet and Russian academic scientific publishers, producing educational material for secondary, technical, and higher schools as well as scientific and reference literature across all areas of physics and mathematics. Its origins trace back to the late 1920s in Leningrad, where it was founded as the State Scientific and Technical Publishing House (GNTI). Over the following decades it was relocated to Moscow and underwent numerous reorganizations and name changes — GTTI, ONTI, GONTI, Gostekhizdat, and Fizmatgiz — before being incorporated into the Nauka publishing house of the USSR Academy of Sciences in 1964 as its main editorial board for physico-mathematical literature, operating under the name Nauka.Fizmatlit until 1999. In 1999, by decision of the Presidium of the Russian Academy of Sciences, the publisher was reorganized into OOO Fizmatlit, and a Scientific Council composed of leading physicists and mathematicians who are full members of the Russian Academy of Sciences was formed. The Presidium tasked OOO Fizmatlit and its Scientific Council with restoring and maintaining the publication of high-quality scientific and educational physico-mathematical literature in quantities sufficient to meet the needs of Russian science and professional education, at prices affordable to the library systems of the BEN RAS and Russian universities. The publisher relocated from its long-standing address at Leninsky Prospekt 15 in Moscow to Profsoyuznaya Street 90, in the Nauka RAS Academic Information Center. Today Fizmatlit remains a leading academic scientific publisher, issuing textbooks for universities, technical colleges, and supplementary education, as well as scientific and reference literature in all fields of physics and mathematics. Its catalogue includes titles on control optimization, X-ray methods, genetic algorithms, chemistry, biology, and medicine. The publisher also maintains a Scientific Council and collaborates with the Russian Academy of Sciences. A related non-commercial organization, ANO Fizmatlit, was created by former employees of the academic Fizmatlit and is directed by Larisa Paniushkina with support from academician and Nobel laureate Vitaly Ginzburg; both publishers cooperate closely.
History
The publishing house of physico-mathematical and technical literature was founded in Leningrad in the late 1920s. Until 1931 it was known as the State Scientific and Technical Publishing House (GNTI, Государственное Научно-Техническое Издательство). In the early 1930s it was transferred to Moscow and changed names several times: in 1931–1939 it was GTTI, ONTI, and GONTI (State United Scientific and Technical Publishing House). In 1938, as part of the reorganization of the Soviet technical literature publishing system, the independent Mashinostroenie publishing house (Mashgiz) was separated from GONTI. From 1939 to 1963 it operated under the names Gostekhizdat and Fizmatgiz. In 1964 it became part of the Nauka publishing house of the USSR Academy of Sciences as the main editorial board for physico-mathematical literature, and until 1999 it was called Nauka.Fizmatlit. In 1999 the publisher moved from its familiar address at Moscow, Leninsky Prospekt 15, to Profsoyuznaya Street 90, in the Nauka RAS Academic Information Center. In the same year, by decision of the Presidium of the Russian Academy of Sciences, the publisher was reorganized and a decision was made to create OOO Fizmatlit and form the Scientific Council of Fizmatlit, composed of leading physicists and mathematicians who are full members of the Russian Academy of Sciences. The Presidium tasked OOO Fizmatlit and its Scientific Council with restoring and subsequently maintaining the publication of high-quality scientific and educational physico-mathematical literature in quantities necessary to meet the needs of science and professional education in the Russian Federation, and at prices affordable to the library systems of the BEN RAS and Russian universities, taking into account their funding from federal, regional, and RAS budgets. From that time, the publisher effectively ceased to be an academic publishing house, and books were published under the Russian-American trademark Fizmatlit. MAIK-Nauka (Физматлит. МАИК-Наука), whose director was Mariya Andreeva. The publisher's headquarters is located in the building of the MAIK Nauka/Interperiodika publishing house at Shukinskaya Street 90, Moscow. Although formally an independent organization, it works closely with the publishing house of the Russian Academy of Sciences. Several employees of the former academic Fizmatlit created the Autonomous Non-Commercial Organization Publishing House of Physico-Mathematical Literature, ANO Fizmatlit (Автономная некоммерческая организация «Издательство физико-математической литературы», АНО Физматлит), directed by Larisa Paniushkina and supported by academician and Nobel nominee Vitaly Ginzburg. Its headquarters is at Shukinskaya Street 12, building 1, Moscow. Both publishers cooperate closely. Today, as for decades, Fizmatlit is a leading scientific academic publisher, issuing educational literature for universities, technical colleges, and supplementary education, as well as scientific and reference literature in all areas of physics and mathematics. Fizmatlit sets itself the task of restoring the classical textbook that once created...
