Overview
Flachglas Wernberg GmbH (stylised as FLACHGLAS Wernberg) is a German glass-processing company headquartered in Wernberg-Köblitz, Bavaria. Founded in 1938 as a branch plant of Sicherheitsglas GmbH of Kunzendorf/Niederlausitz under the name SIGLA GmbH, it is today one of Europe's leading manufacturers of architectural glass and vehicle glazing, and the European market leader in vehicle glazing for rail vehicles. The company operates as part of the Flachglas Gruppe, which describes itself as offering customised glass concepts for modern architecture, serving architects, planners, façade builders and metalworkers with certified, environmentally conscious glazing solutions. The group operates three main production and finishing sites in Germany — Wernberg, Luhe and Osterburg — and, through Flachglas (Schweiz) AG, additional sites in Wikon and Thun in Switzerland. Its product range covers architectural glazing such as thermal-insulation glass, solar-control glass, acoustic glass and safety glass, as well as vehicle glazing systems for rail vehicles, road vehicles and watercraft. The company is also a long-standing partner in the Flachglas MarkenKreis, a network of more than 30 functional-glass manufacturers and wholesalers. After decades under the Deutsche Tafelglas AG (DETAG), Flachglas AG and the British Pilkington Group, the Wernberg plant became independent in 1999 and has since been structured around an employee participation model. The group has grown through acquisitions, including Glashandelsgesellschaft Profi mbH in Luhe-Wildenau (2005), Flachglas Nord-Ost GmbH in Osterburg (2007) and the Swiss subsidiaries of Pilkington Deutschland AG (2009). For the 2010 financial year the group reported revenue of €137 million and a balance-sheet total of €93.7 million.
History
The company was founded in 1938 as a branch plant of Sicherheitsglas GmbH, Kunzendorf/Niederlausitz (now in Poland), at the Wernberg-Köblitz site under the name SIGLA GmbH. In 1946 the Wernberg plant was leased by Deutsche Tafelglas AG (DETAG) and three years later acquired by DETAG. In 1970 Deutsche Tafelglas AG merged with DELOG to form Flachglas AG. Ten years later, through the acquisition of the majority of shares in Flachglas AG, the company was integrated into the British Pilkington Group, one of the largest glass manufacturers in Europe. In 1998 Flachglas AG was restructured. In 1999 the Wernberg-Köblitz plant separated from the Pilkington Group and has since operated as an independent company under the name Flachglas Wernberg GmbH. Since then the company's structure has been based on an employee participation model. In 2005 Flachglas Wernberg GmbH acquired Glashandelsgesellschaft Profi mbH at the Luhe-Wildenau site, and two years later Flachglas Nord-Ost GmbH in Osterburg. In July 2009 Flachglas Wernberg GmbH took over all Swiss subsidiaries of Pilkington Deutschland AG, which were bundled under the holding company Flachglas Schweiz AG and include sites in Wikon (head office) and Thun. The group's consolidated financial statements for 2010 reported revenue of €137 million and a balance-sheet total of €93.7 million.
