Overview
FluxSense AB is a Swedish technology company that develops optical instruments and provides measurement services for gaseous emissions and leak detection. It was started in 2001 as a spin-off from Chalmers University of Technology in Gothenburg, Sweden, to address a need for reliable measurement of diffuse (non-channeled) emissions that had historically been estimated rather than measured. The company is headquartered in Gothenburg and describes itself as a world leader in gaseous emission measurements. FluxSense builds and sells a family of optical remote-sensing and extractive instruments, including SOF (Solar Occultation Flux), SOF Xplorer, SkyDOAS, MeFTIR, MeDOAS and Air Xplorer. These systems detect and quantify a wide range of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) such as alkanes, methane, alkenes, alcohols, formaldehyde, benzene and other aromatics, as well as ammonia, SO2, NO2 and greenhouse gases. The patented SOF technique is recognised as Best Available Technology in the European BREF document for refineries and is standardised according to EN 17628. Instruments can be ordered individually or as complete customer solutions with auxiliary equipment and software, and the company also supplies monitoring stations and mobile laboratories. Alongside hardware, FluxSense provides consultant services and expertise for applications including emission quantification, leak search, air quality assessments, community monitoring, health and safety evaluation, environmental regulation and enforcement, and atmospheric and climate research. Its mobile instruments can map emissions and concentrations within and around facilities cost-effectively, often at fence-line distance without requiring site access. The company serves industry, environmental authorities and the scientific community, and supports compliance processes such as OGMP 2.0. FluxSense's international footprint includes mobile laboratories delivered to the United States, China and South Korea, and instruments operating in ten fixed monitoring stations for real-time air quality in the Los Angeles air basin. The company remains privately held and continues to develop state-of-the-art techniques and instruments for an ever broader range of relevant gases.
History
FluxSense AB was started in 2001 as a spin-off company from Chalmers University of Technology in Gothenburg, Sweden. According to the company, it was founded to fill a need for reliable measurement of diffuse (non-channeled) emissions from large facilities, which had historically been impossible or cumbersome and expensive to measure and were therefore based on models, estimates or calculations that could be highly misleading if setup parameters, input data or algorithms were inaccurate. The company's core technology, the Solar Occultation Flux (SOF) technique, monitors direct solar infrared radiation to detect and quantify emissions of a range of VOCs and other gases such as alkanes, alkenes, alcohols, aldehydes and ammonia. SOF is patented by FluxSense and is considered Best Available Technology in the most recent European BREF document for refineries; it is standardised according to EN 17628. Over time FluxSense expanded its instrument family to include SkyDOAS (Sky Differential Optical Absorption Spectroscopy) for SO2, NO2 and HCHO; MeFTIR (Mobile extractive Fourier Transform Infra-Red) for gas concentrations of VOCs and other gases; MeDOAS (Mobile extractive Differential Optical Absorption Spectroscopy) for BTEX and other gases; and newer compact instruments such as SOF Xplorer and Air Xplorer for rapid emission measurements, leak search and concentration mapping. FluxSense has applied its instruments and services worldwide. The company states that it has delivered mobile laboratories to the United States, China and South Korea, and that its instruments operate in ten fixed monitoring stations for real-time air quality in the Los Angeles air basin. Its studies have shown, among other findings, that the petrochemical industry tends to significantly under-estimate its VOC emissions. Increasing regulations, regulatory oversight and improvements to environmental health and safety have made emissions measurement standard in Europe (CEN), supporting demand for the company's techniques. FluxSense continues to develop state-of-the-art techniques and instruments to measure diffuse emissions for an ever broader range of relevant gases, and provides consultant services and expertise across applications including emission quantification, leak search, air quality assessments, community monitoring, health and safety evaluation, environmental regulation and enforcement, and atmospheric and climate research. The company remains privately held and headquartered in Gothenburg, Sweden.
