Overview

Focus Filmtheater is a non-profit cinema located in Arnhem, the capital of Gelderland in the Netherlands. It is operated by the Stichting Focus Filmtheater Arnhem and is part of the municipality's cultural policy. The venue is situated at the Audrey Hepburnplein and houses five screening rooms. Its programming includes current quality films, highlights from film history, themed series, documentaries, children's films, and educational activities. In summer, films are regularly shown on the rooftop terrace. The theater also features a café-restaurant that is open daily for coffee, lunch, drinks, and dinner. The organization began in 1973 as Filmhuis Arnhem, initially based at Willemsplein 1 in the youth center Willem1, and launched with 'Arnhem Alternatief' as a response to the Arnhem Film Week. In 1978 it moved to the Korenbeurs on the Korenmarkt, where it initially had one screen, later expanded with a second. A third screen was added in November 2005. On 17 February 2006, the name was changed to Focus Filmtheater. In 2018, Focus moved to a newly built film theater at the Audrey Hepburnplein, which received the Heuvelinkprijs in 2020 for the best new construction project in Arnhem. Focus Filmtheater is known for its diverse offerings, which have historically included not only films but also musicals, dance evenings, performances, and comic book exchanges. Today, it continues to serve as a cultural hub in Arnhem, hosting events such as the Bioscoop 10-Daagse and screenings from The Royal Opera & Ballet. The theater maintains a strong community focus, with initiatives like the 2-for-1 promotion during the Bioscoop 10-Daagse. As a non-profit, it relies on support from the municipality and aims to provide accessible, high-quality film experiences.
