Overview
Fønix (also written Foenix) is a Danish theological journal founded in 1976 by theologians Leif Grane, Bent Hahn, Jørgen I. Jensen, Ole Jensen and Niels Thomsen. It publishes articles, reviews and books that explore theology and the humanities and the tension between the two fields. The journal describes itself as offering articles "... gerne med videnskabelig grund under fødderne, men uden det videnskabelige apparat" — that is, with a scholarly foundation but without the full academic apparatus. At its founding it was associated with the Faculty of Theology at the University of Copenhagen and was published with support from the Danish Ministry of Culture's journal support committee. Since 2016 the journal has appeared digitally. Its print side now consists of a publishing operation producing books in theology and literature as well as source editions and translations. The print series is called Palmeserien and is sold on commission through the publisher Eksistensen. Fønix's Palmeserien portfolio includes translations of Martin Luther and Nikolai Berdyaev, studies on Grundtvig and Dostoevsky, and an anthology on mythical motifs in twentieth-century literature by literary scholar Kasper Støvring. The journal and Palmeserien are currently edited by Rasmus H.C. Dreyer (assistant professor, PhD in theology), Kristoffer Garne (parish priest, cand.theol.), Johannes Aakjær Steenbuch (PhD in philosophy and postdoc in theology) and Sasja Stopa. The first issue of Fønix appeared in 1976. The journal's website presents recent articles, reviews and books, including works such as Mikael Stæhr Brorson's "Dramatisk teologi – I verdensteatret med Sløk" (Fønix, 2026, paperback, 258 pages, ISBN 9788793600423).
