Overview

Fondazione Lelio e Lisli Basso-ISSOCO, commonly known as Fondazione Basso, is an Italian non-profit organization established on 30 July 1973 on the initiative of Lelio Basso and his wife Elisa (Lisli) Carini. It was formally recognized as an ente morale (a legal entity of public interest) by decree of the President of the Italian Republic no. 503 of 18 June 1974. In 2005 it merged with the Fondazione Internazionale Lelio Basso (founded in 1976), integrating the promotion of human rights into its activities. The foundation is a documentation, research, training and cultural-promotion centre. It was born from the merger of Lelio Basso's personal library — already containing more than 40,000 volumes at the time — with the Istituto per lo studio della società contemporanea (ISSOCO), a study and research association founded by Basso himself in November 1969. Its library holds around 130,000 books, 5,000 periodicals and collections dating from the 16th century and from the French Revolution onwards, focusing mainly on the social sciences and humanities and on the history of modern and contemporary political thought. Its historical archive preserves around 60 documentary collections, declared of historical interest by the archival superintendency, comprising paper, iconographic, photographic and audio-visual documents. The foundation publishes the biannual journal Parolechiave, a new series of Problemi del Socialismo, a periodical founded by Lelio Basso in 1958. It also runs the Scuola di giornalismo Lelio Basso (Lelio Basso School of Journalism), hosts the Permanent Peoples' Tribunal, and maintains the Europeanrights observatory on respect for fundamental rights in Europe. Its website lists projects, a library, an international archive, and sections on politics and culture, training and publications. The foundation is based in Rome and operates primarily in Italy and Europe as a private, non-profit cultural institution.

History
