Overview

The Fondazione Memoria della Deportazione Biblioteca Archivio Pina e Aldo Ravelli – Centro Studi e Documentazione sulla Resistenza e sulla Deportazione nei lager nazisti ETS is an Italian non-profit foundation based in Milan. It was established in 1999 on the initiative of ANED, the national association of former political deportees to Nazi camps, and is funded by donations and contributions from former deportees and their families. Its mission is to preserve the historical memory of Nazi-Fascist deportation, to promote historical research, and to foster the civic education of new generations through knowledge of the facts and actions that constituted Nazi-Fascist oppression. The foundation is headquartered at Via Dogana 3 in central Milan, in premises donated by Pina Ravelli in fulfilment of the wish of her husband Aldo Ravelli, a former deportee to Mauthausen and Gusen. The site was inaugurated in 2003 and houses a specialised library of around ten thousand volumes catalogued in the SBN system, a reading room open to scholars and students, a paper and audiovisual archive (testimonies, interviews, debates, seminars and public initiatives on Italian deportation), and a conference room seating about seventy people. The archive holds the records of national and Milanese ANED, the papers of Italo Tibaldi – a Mauthausen survivor who dedicated his life to documenting all Italian deportees – and the fonds of other former deportees such as Felice Pirola, Giandomenico Panizza, Armando Sacchetta and Giuseppe Cammareri. The foundation is associated with the Rete degli Istituti per la storia della Resistenza e dell'età contemporanea, a federative system coordinated by the Istituto Nazionale Ferruccio Parri. It carries out educational activities for students and teachers, produces publications, and organises public events, including the project "It's ur history, Bro!" on the meaning of memory journeys today. Its operational staff includes President Floriana Maris and Director Elisabetta Ruffini. Gianfranco Maris was president of the foundation until his death. The foundation is distinct from ANED, although it was created by it and shares its commemorative aims.

History

The Fondazione Memoria della Deportazione was established in 1999 on the initiative of ANED, the Associazione nazionale ex deportati politici nei campi nazisti (National Association of Former Political Deportees to Nazi Camps). It was created thanks to the commitment of ANED and to donations and contributions from former deportees and their families. The foundation and ANED remain distinct legal entities, although they share a common commemorative purpose. The foundation's assets derive from a donation by Pina and Aldo Ravelli, consisting of a property and a sum of money. Aldo Ravelli had been deported to Mauthausen and Gusen; for many years he ran his stockbroking business from the same premises at Via Dogana 3 in Milan, behind Piazza del Duomo. Pina Ravelli donated these premises to realise her husband's wish, and the foundation's headquarters were inaugurated there in 2003. From its Milan base, the foundation began collecting, preserving and making available documentary material, conducting research, disseminating knowledge and promoting cultural and educational activities. It is associated with the Rete degli Istituti per la storia della Resistenza e dell'età contemporanea, a federative system coordinated by the Istituto Nazionale Ferruccio Parri. Gianfranco Maris served as president of the foundation until his death. The foundation's archive holds the records of national ANED and of ANED Milano, as well as the papers of Italo Tibaldi, a Mauthausen survivor, national councillor and treasurer of ANED until 2002, who dedicated his life to studies and research on deportation, in particular to compiling a register of all Italian deportees to Nazi concentration camps. It also preserves the archival fonds of other former deportees, including Felice Pirola, Giandomenico Panizza, Armando Sacchetta and Giuseppe Cammareri. Cataloguing and inventorying work has also been carried out on photographic, audio and video material. The foundation's library contains approximately ten thousand volumes, catalogued in the SBN environment, forming an organic collection of what has been written in Italy and abroad on deportation. Cataloguing of recently acquired book material is ongoing. The foundation manages various educational and professional development initiatives for students and teachers who wish to address the theme of deportation, also making available suitable materials and tools. It publishes works such as "I nomi dei deportati nella Memorialistica della deportazione", edited by Teresa Brucoli with a preface by Massimo Castoldi, and organises public events, including the project "It's ur history, Bro!" on memory journeys. The foundation is supported through donations, including the Italian 5x1000 mechanism, and its operational staff includes President Floriana Maris and Director Elisabetta Ruffini.
